Oops forgot to add, its synthetic oil that i have, does this make any difference?

Probably the easiest way of finding out what oil is in it is to call the people who last serviced it, and ask what they use. Toyota seem to be fans of Castrol GTX Magnatec 10w-40, so if its main dealer serviced chances are it'll be that! Don't take my word though - just give 'em a call!

mixing oils will not harm your engine as long as you mix 5 30 with 5 30 and 10 40 with 10 40. I know my celica takes 5 30, and I know that mixing different name brands will not hurt your engine. Also, synthetic oil should not be used in older engines with leaks or the possibility of leaks. if your engine is older, stick with regular oil, if it is newer, use synthetic. Also, do not switch to synthetic cold turkey. make sure you use half and half for the first few oil changes and then use just synthetic. This will ensure your motor's acceptance of the synthetic oil.

Just a quick question, how much of a difference does it make when choosing oil, and what is better to use and why?

Am asking purely for educational purposes

Thanks

My Celica manual states that 5-30 will give the greatest fuel economy. I believe (although i could be wrong) that because it is a thinner oil it provides maximum lubrication with a smaller layer. and hence resists the engine less, my description is rubbish, but at least i know what i mean :) somebody may have a better explanation, or indeed a correct one.

P.S i have topped up with Castol Magnatec 10-40 synthetic, will continue to do so until the car is weened onto it. that way no damage will be done to the engine. Hope this topic has helped others as well as me, its sometimes these simple problems we need help with too :D
