I’ve been trying to get the most from my OEM tyres on the front of the Aygo and had set myself a target of getting 25 000 miles from them. Just recently shes been a bit twitchy in the corners but the tyres are legal – yesterday she clicked over the magic 25 000 so I got 2 new fronts today.

I’ve gone like for like with the Continental EcoContact 3 - 155 / 65 / R14 T.

Once the old ones were off I had a better look and whilst both still legal the f/o/s was quite worn to one side so I might need to get alignment looked at.

The other one would probably have gone another 1000 and the rears are still on and will probably do another 5000.

Anyway got them for £29.90 each so a quick bit of maths tells me the Aygo costs about £1.20 in each tyre per 1000 miles (well for my driving style anyway). That will do for me !

Good price for those tyres. I was quoted 60 quid for an exact replacement.

And it is things like this that are making the Aygo more and more tempting . . . .

Posted

kwick fit quoted me £120 for 2 new front tyres plus £20 for wheel balanceing, so i just put the money towards alloys instead

top tip:

If you getting replacement tyres, for only £2-3 extra you can get the anti-kerbing rim protector tyres that Continental fitted to some of the Aygos with alloys. There absolutly great at protecting the narrow (4.5J) standard Aygo alloys

Ask for Continental eco-contact 3, 155/65 R14 75T FR. The FR at the end refers to the rim protector. I've seen them for sale on the net for about £35 each

Can anyone tell me why I get 55-58mpg, keep the tyres maintained at the recommended pressures and yet after just 11500 miles I need two new front tyres ??

OK, I know you're all thinking that I must be doing something wrong, but I honestly cannot see what. Without wishing to sound big-headed, I am a former Traffic Cop and a Senior Examiner for the IAM and I thought I was a safe and careful driver. I don't think I have ever had tyres wear out that quickly unless the tracking was out (Blame the wife!). These two have worn out evenly across the width.

I bought the car brand new last Dec, off the internet at a bargain price, as a run around for wet days and when the bike was garaged and everything has been first rate - except the tyres. Local Toyota dealer charges £125 all in for a service too.

Sounds like you are getting good mpg and I would hope to get around 25000 miles as SMW has. (I have just replaced the front tyres on our other car after 27000 miles a Mitsubishi Space Star which also has Ecocontact tyres).

I know tyre quality should be better nowdays thani n the past but there is the chance you had a couple of tyres from a batch that had been made with softer compound.

It reminds me of a tyre my brother had on a Honda CD175 bike that he bought new and it wore out in 250 miles instead of 5-6000 miles which would have been the norm for that type of bike.

We get tyre wear issues raised a lot. There seems no sense in somebody getting 25K out of tyres and others only 10K but if the alignment is OK, tyre pressures etc, then it can only be put down to driving style. Mrs Kingo has a Yaris, they normally do 20K on the standard Bridgestones on most peoples cars, Mrs Kingo had BALD tyres with the wires hanging out at 10K, I was shocked, had it thouroughly checked and all was OK, We now have Firestones on it which have been superb. IMHO tyres are not what they used to be... Just like everything else I suppose :D:

Kingo

I replaced my two front tyres at 11,000 miles due to the front left ebing completely bald, the right one was on the border but both were to be replaced any way. I havent replaced my back ones yet as they still have reasonable tread for 15,000 miles now.

I recently replaced my original Bridgestones on the front at 17,500 miles.............thats a low mileage for me.

My previous Yaris had Goodyear GT3's on and still had loads of tread at 26,000 miles when I sold the car.

Needless to say I did not buy Bridgestones as replacements

A quick check on www.etyres.co.uk gives you a reasonable price for tyres. I have used etyres in the past, and find I get better service than if you take it to your local tyre shop. They are very prompt, and I would recommend them to anyone, especially as they come to you and take away all the old ones. It just means you have to make him a cuppa for when he has finished fitting them.

They don't list the "FR" type tho? :)

The FRs are still being manufactured. My experience is that most vendors want to sell what ever they have on the shelf. I can get FR's from my local dealer (Lethal Auto Design) who is more helpful and will order them in.

It's a case of "computer says no" with the less helpful tyre fitters.

(My friend has recently bought a Type R Civic, gets up to 8,000 miles on the front tyres & will cost him approx £200 a pair!)

We're the same, we've had the Aygo for nearly 2 years, and it's done 12,500 miles. We've just had to get new fronts as the old ones were down to 2mm. All alignment seems fine, and neither of us drive the car 'too' hard....not for 90% of the time anyway.

Everything else seems to be fine, MPG is pretty good, the only issue we have is the boot button is starting to stick.

Well done to the OP for getting 25k out of his tyres.

Ooops, also just realised i've not posted on here for about 20 months....Must try harder.

I've rotated my tyres (contiEcoContact 3) once and have just hit 30k miles. All are on 4mm remaining tread, except the front left, which is on 3mm (roundabouts). I reckon they'll ok all summer 2008 before changing the lot.

Mostly A roads and some motorway driving

All 4 tyres, fitted including VAT, conti eco contact 3 at £160 (£40 each!)

Just had my tyres replaced this weekend.

The old ones had been on my car for 27.500km (17,000mi).

Took off Continental EcoContact3's with 3mm thread remaining and

replaced them with Vredestein SnowTrac2 in the same (original) size.

Cost me €332 (±£250) for the four tyres + fitting an balancing.

When spring comes I'll be taking these wheels off, to fit a second

(2nd hand) set with EcoContact3's again. These are the same rims

and they've only been under another car for 7.000km (4.350mi)

Conti have discontinued the 155/65 R14 75T FR :( Does anyone know of any other brands with a rim protector?

Are you the only driver of the car? Other drivers of your car may not be so careful and undo all the hard work you’ve done in one simple journey! The only other reason as to why the tread wears so quickly would be due to heavy breaking or wheel spinning/heavy acceleration.

I think it naturally pushes in the corners slightly, so if you normally corner at a reasonable speed, and I mean safely too, the front seems to push and scrub the fronts.

This is something that would be more apparnet dependng on your normal driving roads I guess. I have a lot of turns and 90 degree bends on my commute through the countryside.

Mine lasted 12k - just.

No such trouble on 15" 195s. Also a quick check on blackcircles I can get TOYO 195 15's for only a few pounds more than the OEM Conti.

I think the car needs at least 175's in my humble opinion.

Where did you get those tyres for £29.90 each? Were they second hand?
