Anchorman,

FYI, if its the same Mr Yuill (he had a partner, Mr Dodds) there was a big splash in our local paper

recently about him dying. A bit of a character by all accounts.

Cheers,

Dave.

Thats the one Dave.

They have a considerable fleet of trucks and he was quite a character. It didn't matter who you were though, if you were ther at breakfast time you got a fry up.

He knew some colourful language as well!

Hi guys,

Whilst im not entirley new to toyota having owned them previously I am new to my 2001 Rav 4 GX D4D, I seem to be getting all sorts of vibrations felt especially through my steering, pedals and gear change and my bottom! When the car revs up the range between 2500 - 3000 rpm? Its not a violent vibration but enough to make me feel it and annoy me.

I'd hate to take it to a dealer only to be told that its normal engine vibration because it didnt do it for the first couple of days and it has appeared as we all know the mechanics these days dont really seem to be of any help when it comes to these sort of things! It also randomly hesitates when accellerating but I can only record it actually doing it on two journeys. Anyways, is this a symptom of this mass flywheel thingy?

I can eliminate the wheels being out of balance because the same fault occurs wehn stood still revving it up, and ultimately I do have a degree of wheel wobble which is a definate 'wobble' though the steering at sppeds of 70 - 80 mph!! The clutch also feels a little lumpy when applying it to set off, but not through the rest of the gearchanges, again is this connected or simply ANOTHER fault!

Im seriously strating to regret buying this now, but in a strange sort of way I really DO like the car, I just really want it sorrting as the faults I have are the sort that will really really annoy me to the point of hating the damn thing and getting rid!

So it seems I havea few problems and I've only owned the car 5 days!!

I'd appreciate any help on this matter, and/or if any local peeps could help out by maybe having a drive to compare it and see if it is actually a normal characteristic??

My number is 07856 320191 as I dont always have access to the net.

Cheers muchly

Matt.

Matt,

Try using the search function at bottom of page for similar threads. If still no luck

give it a couple of days until some of the more technical members get a chance to

read your question. Dont want to be alarmist but sounds like the dreaded flywheel

problem.

Good Luck,

Dave.

Thanks for posting your issue with the flywheel and to everyone else that’s posted on the issue. I own a 03 RAV4 D4D bought from new in 2003 and since has done 50K miles with full Toyota service history. As its 3 years and 8 months after registration its outside the warranty.

After 50K miles I started hearing a rattle in the engine bay and took into a Toyota garage who came back with a bill of £2458.36! to replace the flywheel and clutch (is this price a record?). The garage asked Toyota customer services to extend the warranty on the flywheel which they refused. I spoke to customer services and they gave a “good will gesture” reducing the price to £1490.26. After several further telephone calls I hit a brick wall with Toyota customer services.

From reading other posts its obvious Toyota know there was a problem with the dual mass flywheel in a batch of RAV4 and avensis D4D cars. For some cars (up to 2002 I think) they extended the warranty to 80K miles and designed a “counter-measure” for cars produced from then on, including (supposedly) my car.

Toyota could have (and morally should have) extended the warranty on the flywheel for all D4D cars to 80K miles as its clear their counter measure doesn’t work and their design is at fault (the number of people reporting the fault and the size of the bill to repair the fault after such as short period of ownership should result in an extended warranty).

I’ve looked into the Sale of Goods act, but I’m unclear how this would apply, and you have to take the garage you bought the car from to court not the manufacturer. So I agree legal action looks unlikely.

If anyone else has a similar problem I would encourage them to post to this site and perhaps we could contact Watch Dog, trading standards office, Which? or some other consumer rights organisation.

Honda CRV here I come.

Simon

Simon,

I'm a new user to this site so if I make mistake's please say so. The reason I'm here is to try and identify the loud banging from under the bonnet when the car sets off and occurs in most gears. It seems that this problem does answer a lot of my questions but my rav is an 03 model and has just had it's 4th year on the road, however having only done 29k it's somewhat dissapointing that a company who suffered with component failure on Carina E and Avensis (as they were built in Britain and used European components) why wont they acknowledge a component un-fit for purpose and extend the warranty on this and any subsequent'y damaged component.

My problem has only just started and the car is sat in the garage awaiting advice from the local dealer as to my next course of action, I hold no hope of Toyota standing up and accepting their responsibilities as some posts suggest success others astronomical costs for replacement flywheels and clutches.

I agree with the idea of watchdog being informed but as it's not a safety issue would they take it up.
