Groaning Sound When Turning!

Hey Guys

Just wondered if anyone has any thoughts on this before I take it to the garage.

When performing sharp turns I get a groaning noise. Sounds like either the power steering or the ball bearings. Some days its very bad and some days its not noticable. It seems to be only when i turn to the right (possibly due to roundabouts, must admit ive not tried a sharp left turn so perhaps I will tomorrow)

Today when my car was stationery, I turned the wheel and sound was present, this would suggest to me it was the power steering but im no expert sadly! I have obviously checked the power steering fluid level and it seems ok.

Any ideas?

I have a long drive next Friday and will use the other car if this could make the problem worse.. shame the other car is a ford ka tho!! :( (haha nice car but going from a supra ....)

PS I changed m alloys to 19inch about 2 years ago, do you think this extra size could cause the problem?

id say its not the alloys the camber wont have changed enough to do that

sounds like your power steering pump is straining to me

i wouldn't have thought it was a bearing as theyre more a grinding than a groaning

hope that helps

ive just thought how wide are the alloys bcoz if theyre wider then it would put the pump under strain there fore leading to its demise over time

Thanks for the suggestions..

The alloys are 8 (front) and 9 (rear)..

I am pretty sure its not the ball bearings as I get the noise when i turn either direction, therefore unless they have both gone at the same time, it cant be that!.

If its the steering pump, what sort of fix are we talking here, straight replacement? And if so, are we talking a lot of cash here?

I love my supra and intend to keep it at least for a few more years, so i dont mind spending, but obviously no one likes to pay out a lot!

One more thing, if its the steering pump, will this gradually degrade until it just stops? I have a reasonable length journey at the weekend, hoping it will be ok..

Thanks again

nah its straight replace as far as i know but its not that pricey and if you ring this number youll find parts in a matter of hours just tell them what you want theyre cheap as chips phone call cost's £1.20 ish a min

09069 190 255 its a part finder place good one too i swear by it

if you got long journey it should be ok it wont seaze up or anything itll just become non assisted steering

Thanks Trixster..

I will get it diagnosed and confirmed before I buy anything.. just about to buy a house so its pretty crappy timing. On the good side, apart from this weekend, I dont do that many miles in it, so I am pretty sure i can leave it a month or two.

Cheers again
