Which Diesel 1.4 Or 2.0 D4d?

Would really welcome some advice as to which diesel variant to buy. I have a daily commute of around 60 miles, mostly motorway, and initially thought the 2.0 116 BHP model (which is hard to find) would be best for me. Having read the reviews however the 1.4 90 BHP version seems to get rave reviews for its pulling power and fuel economy of over 60 mpg.

Can anyone just offer a brief opinion of the comparison or I'd be interested to hear comments about the 1.4 performance on Motorways and overtaking, for example. On the face of it a 1.4 appears a bit small for me but I can be convinced otherwise!

All help appreciated.

Cheers

Paul

I own a 2.0 diesel and i can't fault it. I do a 50 mile commute each day and get around 55 mpg. Can't comment on the 1.4 but the 2.0 is quite nippy when required

I test drove a 1.4 and thought it was a 2l .... I had to check with the dealership to make sure they had not given me a 2l by mistake

However there is a slight difference and I plumped up for the 2l - I say test drive them both.

Yes I have heard that the 1.4 is deceptively powerful and the attraction for me is things like cheaper tax and economy too. I just don't want it to be under-powered for me that's all.

I have a 1.4D4D and its fine for me. It's !Removed! quick for the size of engine. I haven't driven a 2.0D4D and it will undoubtably be quicker but as you say less economical and dearer tax etc., so you pays your money and takes your choice!

i have seen 120mph from my 1.4 D4D and it will keep with a 2.0 D$D to about 75 and then the extra power of the 2.0 pulls it away a bit.

from a tax point of view though the 1.4 will save you money and you do get very similar MPG figures from the 1.4 and 2.0

  • 3 months later...

Recently got a 2004/04 Corolla T-Spirit 2.0 D-4D 116ps.

Got these during a 240 mile round trip, mostly motorways at 60-80 mph. the rest on A roads.

Average speed shown was 42 mph. Fuel consumption was 61 mpg with occasional use of A/C. Plenty of torque from as low as 2000 rpm. In normal circumstances, I use 2200 rpm to change gears. Engine is a little noisy, particularily when cold.
