D4d Flywheel Questions

I have heard that avensis d4d engines suffer from a bad dual flywheel design, and the flywheel breaks up about 100k.

Is this design fault similar to all current ranges, or has it effected certin years

thanks

Small Update,

Talking to alot of Avensis owners they have all had a problem with the flywheel tac'ing and then eventually knocking.

Toyota has realsed a new part range,

Their is actually a Part Number and an entire range of dualmass flywheels that are bad.

The part number translates to a date of production.

How old is your avensis, and how many miles has she done.

mine is a 2004 (04 plate) with 55k on the clock.

I wondered if it was made in the uk, as it has the power heater which the handbook tells me is not available in the UK....

Does your car go Tac tac tac on idle ?

and when you rev and hold it the noise goes away?

well, it has a distinctive diesel noise at idle which then smoothes out with revs. doesn't sound excesively TAC TAC TAC though. i don't have much to compare it to to be honest.

anything you can inspect on the flywheel?

Well, my Avensis has develped this Tac Tac Tac noise only on idle,

- I have spoke to other d4d owners and they have said this noise only starts to happen when the flywheel is falling apart.

-the Tac Tac noise then become knocking noise.

Unfortunatly you cant inspect any thing, fly wheel is in the gearbox.

I think the R4 Has the same flywheel and some problems are on these forums about it.

The replacment KIT consists of a clutch

release bearing, pressure plate, Flywheel and some bolts

about 500.00 andd 500 in labour.

I will see if i can record my noise for you.

strangely enough a bloke from work has just had the flywheel give up on his Octavia diesel. exactly the same as described above. noise got worse and worse. they did it under warranty (its a lease car anyway) but it was a bit of a fight.

whats wrong with a solid one, FFS....

Well the Dual Mass flywheels are made to protect the transmition, however the problem is with the bits holding each other together getting loose and then eventually tac'ing then knocking.

When I spoke to the Toyota tech at my local branch they kind of refused the problem, and then Whne i told him, i had spoke to 15 people who had replaced the Dual Mass fly wheel, or Converted it back to the Carina/Avensis Single Solid one (1CTE) they when all quite, and got a book out, on that it did mention about the fly wheel, and cars that are dated Pre 2003 have possible bad flywheel's. However I know of a guy recently whos 2004 flywheel has just given up. The tech/parts guy claimed that this was an updated part, which would cure it.

However ....

for 1000.00 we pay for Toyota bad part manufacturin/buying. I dont see why we should payfor it. A flywheel should be for a lifetime of the engine.

How many soild flywheels did u hear of failing, only these dual mass flywheels are having problems.

Well i really hope they sort this flywheel problem out as im due to replace my 290k reliable 1998 Avensis with something like an 04/54 or 05 model and i'm using it for a Taxi so this is the last thing i want to happen.

Have Toyota had a recall regarding this issue or is it a wait when it happens problem.

Must admit i'm concerned.

No recall... Toyota wont admit to a problem with the dualmass fly wheel.

- But on the Toyota Memo i read they said any production cars from 2003 shouldnt have this problem.

However I know of one car which has had problems.

All the rest seem fine.

keep the old car better the devil you know !!!!!!

The old car is good

the new car is cheaper to run, better on diesel... better /cheaper insrance... cheaper tax .. etc

umm yep BUT can the car be off the road for long !!!!

FACT build quality is not what it used to be

If I read this aright, would a 55/06 "theoretically" have a flywheel of a different design, and so not have this problem?

Considering replacing my "Y"-reg Avensis GS Tourer with a T3-X Hatchback around that sort of age, and having had gear box probs (1st and final bearings) and the uniquotous (sp) "mysterious oil usage" I want to avoid any real known problems/issues.

Well Toyota claim, that Cars above 2003 should not be effected.

they use a diffrent part number from the clutch plate and flywheel.

You should be ok

The thing that surprises and shocks me is Toyota themselves, this problem has been around for years on the D4D but they have still refused to recognize that the new flywheels they have made are utter S**t! thus making Toyota look a poor buy.

Toyota themselves even look shoddy by not even admitting to this major problem when it seems like every man and his dog knows about it.

Sort it out Toyota!!!

Just to inform you all i rang Toyota yesterday to express my concern over this flywheel problem.

I spoke to a woman in the service department and she said there was no known issue with it and that everything was fine with Toyota, after a few minutes of asking what must of seemed difficult questions that she could not answer (no offence but why is a woman that knows f all about cars working the the service dept?) she then put me on to the Service manager.

Now he initially denied that there was a problem but after he was aware that i knew what i was talking about and that i was a taxidriver and not watchdog he openly admitted to me that there IS a problem but in his own words mainly on older d4d engines but not ruling out the new ones.

He carried on to say it is rare that the just go bang, and stated that if they do fail they will give you a sign by vibrating in the G/box.

He said it mainly goes on cars that does alot of work i.e taxidrivers like me, ermm cheers.

Doesn't fill me with a lot of confidence i'm afraid.
