Diesel Rav 4 Clutch Flywheel Failure

I have a 2002 Rav4 DVD GX Diesel and have just had a new clutch and flyweel replace at 54,000 miles at a cost of £2,000!

The garage said it was "wear and tear" the slipping clutch took out the flywheel. Needless to say Toyota have backed them.

Toyota have admitted in their last letter to me that there are durability issues with the flywheel on this model but in my case the condition of the parts tells them that the slipping clutch plate caused the damage to the flywheel and not the other way round. HOW COULD THEY TELL WHICH CAUSED THE PROBLEM????

I feel that at 54,000 miles, 5 years old, mostly motorway driving, never been off road or used for towing that the dual mass flywheel split and took out the clutch and therefore would have been covered on extended warranty.

I am hoping to find anyone else who have had similar issues as myself to contact me on the forum or www.mary.rav4@hotmail.co.uk

Good Luck.

Hi Mary

I had exactly the same problem, same mileage, same model on a 52 plate the clutch was slipping which was I felt was excessive wear considering the way I drive the car and that the mileage was so low. I took it to an independent Toyota dealer and gave them the stock description of flywheel failure (which you will find under dual mass flywheel in the forum) they agreed with my comments and replaced the complete clutch and flywheel under the extended warranty.

I also had the standard rav4 sunroof leak which they dealt with at the same time again under extended warranty, which indecently was due to expire one month from the date the work was carried out. I am of the opinion that it’s a bit of a lottery as to what decision you get from Mr.T. I have had dealings with the larger dealerships notably RRG who I found to be totally discourteous and of no help what so ever. They wanted £300 to investigate the leak and if it was found to be a seal I would have had to pay for the lot.

I have read on the forum that people have successfully appealed Toyota warranty decisions after the fact, so suggest you don’t give up on it, its all about reputation and if you shout loud enough you may also succeed.

Good luck

My ex wife has had a similar problem...long story, suffice to say new flywheel needed at £1800.

I think eveyone with the problem should get hold of Watchdog and see what happens. It is obviously a fault that Toyota don't want to pay for.

What do you all reckon

Dave

I have had exactly the same issue and posted to this forum on the thread called "flywheel problem". Toyota must know all about it, just from the number of posts on this site alone. I would encourage anyone else with the problem to register here and describe their problem and their experience of toyota custmer services as well.

I'm in full agreement with making as much publicity about the issue as possible, including watch dog, which?, trading standards and the media. As a bill of 1500 quid after 3 years and 8 months for what is marketed as a reliable car is just unlucky........if it only happened to my car. But it isn't just my car, this failure was always going to happen because of the poor design of the dual mass flywheel.

Hi we have just had to pay a bill of £1600.00 for a new clutch and flywheel on 2005 Rav4 we have only had it for 9months and done 9000 miles a third of that motorway driving. We bought it from RRG salford quay who have given us the most appalling customer service !!!!The car is only 3months out of manufcturers warranty we were told because we negotiated a price for our car(part exchange) who doesn;t???? that we were not given an extended warranty

We were fobed of with, we are looking into it, someone will get back to you etc etcwasted at least 10 phone calls and two days of getting upset and anxious waiting for a reply from then.We are totally disgusted with the quality of second hand Toyota cars and even more disgusted by the way we have been treated by RRG.

I've had a quick read in the DMF pinned post, and from what i can see you should be coverd by a 5year warranty not the usual 3year. i'm sure some of the guys will be along soon with some more info for you, hope you have some sucess with the payment. Mike.

I have bought 3 Ravs from RRG Salford my present one being the last i will ever buy from them, Their customer service + sales techniques leave much to be desired, my series 2 rav developed DMF problems at 23000 mls from new, + most of that was motorway use, I also negotiated a discount on my brand new car + was treated like S**T as a result.. :o

There was something of a personality clash between the salesman and myself when I got my RAV from RRG Macclesfield. He has now departed!!!

Having said that they have been very good in all other respects and the dealer manager is first class.

I have a job to fault them.

Try RRG Stockport - I have not been able to fault them, now on our 4th Toyata (and second Rav) every minor query/ fault has been very promply dealt with including the new Auris with brake squeal - I think a lot depends on how you approach a dealer with a problem - get them on your side and the staff will always look after you. I did a quick check, on the cars I have had, and stopped counting at 30 and have never had a major problem getting dealers to sort out a genuine problems and I have had some in my time - a brand new Rover needing a new V8 engine two weeks old, Sierra 4x4 2.9 needing a new clutch bearing in the first month etc etc.
