Vibrating Knob!

Doesn't happen all the time but occasionally when accelerating in 3rd gear I can feel a vibration in the gear stick and can hear a buzzing noise. If I think about it...probably more likely to happen if I've been a bit lazy with the gear change and labored the engine a bit. When its happening if I back off the power and gently bring it back in then it usually goes, or if I change gear - but if I stay on the power when its happening it continues until I change.

Any ideas??

Cheers all

Its just resonating back up through the gear stick. Don't worry about it but as a matter of course don't over labour the engine.

Regards

I had the same issue. This is a known about fault in 3rd and 5th gear which reguires a gearbox rebuild with replacement parts. Apparently gearboxes were obtained from two different suppliers / countries so it is critical to get the 'right' replacement parts. I was without the car for a couple of days but fortunately it was still under warranty.

Is it likely to get worse over time? I've got a years warranty on the car so am I better to keep an eye on it or approach it early with Toyota?

Do it now if its a known issue. You don't want it to get worse after the warranty period. You'll have to get the dealer to acknowledge it first.

dav

Can you provide the details for roly?

Think I may have to monitor it for a while - hasn't done it at all for 2 days typically! Only had the car for a few weeks so will get a better picture the more I drive, once I know exactly when it occurs I can take it in for a check up. If I do it now sods law dictates the car will behave and the dealer will think I'm a nutter!

Keep you posted

As I said in the first place, I wouldn't be too concerned if it is slight or very intermittent but I have to bow to dav's experience if he knows of a problem.

Keep your fingers crossed!

  • 5 months later...

Just thought I'd let you know, the vibration gradually got worse so took it back to Mr T and it was fixed under warranty - box is as smooth as anything now. Was a known problem, lost the car for three days but got to play around in a Yaris T sport which was a lot of fun....but not sad to get back into the RAV again
