Corolla Rear Brakes

After my corolla failed the MOT on rear brake uneven application, i have changed the shoes, put a fitting kit on, changed the wheels cylinders but still no luck, they are applying more pressure on the near side and less on the offside now im pulling my hair out as i don't know what else it could be :crybaby: its a 1989 corolla executive 1.6 auto with drums on the back

If you have any suggestions i would greatly appreciate it :(

did you slacken the handbrake right of before you adjusted the brake shoes up.

did you slacken the handbrake right of before you adjusted the brake shoes up.

To be honest i dont even know how to adjust the self adjusters, there was nothing wrong with the handbrake application just the rear brakes :wacko:

To be honest i dont even know how to adjust the self adjusters, there was nothing wrong with the handbrake application just the rear brakes :wacko:

you must slacken the handbrake to allow the levers on the shoes to be fully back so that they are not pulling the shoes closer to the drum .when this is done you then need to adjust the so called auto adjuster till you can feel the drum touching slightly .when the shoes have been set up you then re-adjust the handbrake .by doing this you will have set the brake shoes both at the same distance to the drum therefore should work at the same time.ps.when you have adjusted the shoes put the droums on press the foot brake and operate handbrake then check brake shoe adjustment again as this centralises the shoes and you can ussually adjust a bit more try that .post if you need to know anything else :thumbsup:

so you're saying that the handbrake was fine on the MOT and both side were even BUT the footbrake was dodgy.

you've changed the brakes, replaced the wheel cylinders and the problem persists.

Check the brake piping for any dents or crushing and if its all normal then try blowing the rear brakelines out with compressed air as you might have some debris in the pipework causing a blockage.

A long shot is that the flexible hose has gone soft and is swelling rather than passing the pressure onto the wheel cylinder - Mr MOT should have spotted that though.

Thats exactly what im saying :thumbsup:

But if the brake hose was swelling that still doesnt explain why there is more pressure on the nearside than the offside, it been advised that it wouldnt be a crushed pipe as the brakes would bind due to the fluid not returning as quick as it should but the brakes dont bind, and speaking to a brake specialist he seems to think its the rear compensator valve ? anybody know where this is on this model ?
