Oil And Filter Change

I called at my local Toyota dealer today to book my XT3 in for a oil and filter change, I was shocked when they quoted me £85 to do this. My daughter was charged £25 for the same job at the local Ford garage! I am an HGV fitter who specialises in engine and transmission repairs but due to pressures of work find it hard to find time to work on my own vehicles, but at them prices i will be finding time. £25 for five Litres oil, £10 for a filter, they want £50 for half hours work.

The 12 month service (a bit more than just oil & filter) was around £150. I was incensed that they charged around £25 to tighten the handbrake. I thought that things like that would be part of the service cost. I never had that sort of item charged for when I had Fords. After argument they dropped it but if this typical of Toyota I won't be buying the make again.

It's not necessarily typical of Toyota, but more typical of your dealer. It's strange that all the dealers seem to charge different prices for the same thing. Don't assume that the price you're quoted is standard ! Ring some other dealers in the area - you may be surprised/shocked etc.

My XT4 had its first (10,000 mile) service at the dealer last week. Done whilst I waited - took about an hour and a half and cost me £130.

I could have done it myself for less money but I gave up doing all my own maintenance about 20 years ago, when I was able to buy my first new car. Car was OK but dealer service poor; next car not so good and dealer service even worse. If I get decent service from a dealer, I tend to stick with them; next time I found a good Citroen dealer and my next 4 cars were from him - only moved away when I wanted a 4x4 and Citroen don't do one. I got a Freelander - car was great but not impressed by the dealer service. Ended up getting maintenance done by a local garage. Toyota doing fine by me so far.

I don't object paying a bit extra if the service is good.

I agree with Boro Sera that it depends on your dealer rather than on the marque - have come across good and bad dealers within each of the several marques including Toyota. It seems to me that the respective HQs don't do much in the way of quality control, which is a bit disappointing; you buy a vehicle which is promoted as excellent so you expect a good level of expertise and integrity from the dealer.

Having received very poor service from our nearest Toyota dealer we decided to buy our new RAV from Alexander Wallace in Elgin about whom I had heard better reports, and so far they have been really good.

I think the choice of dealer is just as important in the whole 'car experience' as the choice of car.

40k service quoted by Hodgsons 190ish+VAT Border Toyota 160ish inc VAT. TBH for the 10k it's little more than inspection and an oil and filter change so now it's not covered by Mr T i'll be doing the intermediate myself from now on.

hey, my SL Benz went in for an A service, which is "oil & filter and we look at the brakes", which means, they don't even take the wheels off, they just look at the discs & pads with a torch!, cost? £170 + vat, that's £105 and hour. But my old '96 RAV just cost me £22.00 for something similar, somehow I love my RAV a lot more ..... :D

Yes but take care Hector because Clare took hers for service the other day and in my opinion they took her to the cleaners. They also had a look at the brakes through the wheels and charged her for a tin of brake cleaner which I suspect was nowhere near used up.

The moral of the story is to phone around and agree the price before you leave the keys with somebody. Some dealers think having the car is 9/10ths of the law and your money is theirs to spend.

I had a 2 yr old Peugeot 106 that I stupidly put in for its 2 yr service, no more than oil and filter change and inspect brakes.

The robbing ba$$$$$s charged me £140 for that, and that was me supplying the oil and filter

So no parts supplied apart from a sump washer.

Totally agree Anchorman, I also believe I was taken "to the cleaners".My problem is that over here on the IOM we have only one Toyota Main Dealer and I really wanted (or my Dad did) the service history to look OK. If in time I can latch on to a decent garage on island that knows what they are doing I will use them for the routine stuff (brakes and oil change),but I wonder if being the motor they have become ( full of technology) they might be out of reach of some garages?

Clare

I think a good independent would be quite capable. You need to start asking around.

Cheers.
