Oulton Park Drift Day Today

Have to say what an utterly utterly fantastic day. Well worth the money, Derek the instructor was excellent and really liked the car too :) Said it was the best balanced car he'd driven that day, loads more rear end grip than the host of far more modern BMWs once you'd turned their TC off. That did mean I had to be pretty aggresive on the throttle to get the back end to break away, but it was pretty easy to balance after that.

Was really getting into it by the end, taking corners with full opposite lock all the way round and not ending up pointing back the way I'd been ;)

Doesn't really put much strain on the car either, only used half a tank of fuel all day and my tyres aren't showing any sign of wear. It's a special polished tarmac surface that's really really smooth and slippery. Only time you even hear the tyres squealing is when you're very very sideways indeed and probably in danger of spinning out anyway.

Had a few backwards pointing moments, half spins and other off track excursions and one absolutely monumental higher speed spin, luckily there's nothing much to hit. Tis quite muddy off the track though as one side of my car demonstrates...

Highly recommended, I'd consider doing it again at some point.

It was an 'introduction to drifting' day run by Motorsport Vision (the people that own Oulton Park and various other circuits).

Cost was £125 for the day, driver sign on started at 7:30 and the briefing was 8:45. Straight after that you head on track and it ended about 4:30, with an hour break for lunch. The price included 2 'sighting laps' with the instructor before you were allowed out by yourself and then as much instruction as you wanted during the day, just grab an instructor for a few laps whenever you feel like it (or let them drive your car, which I did and it was really an eye opener). There were 2 instructors and at least one of them was free most of the time, so you can get quite a bit of tuition if you want.

Apparently the best way to find out when they're running the next one is to ring them up, trackdays number is on their website . You'll get through to someone at Brands Hatch, but they should be able to help you. According to the instructor there is some kind of drift day held every couple of weeks, but they're rarely on the website for some reason.

You would need rear wheel drive but we include free instruction on all our events and have a zero failure rate on getting people sideways with a daft grin :goof:
