Avensis 1998 gs with lean burn 7fe engine , its service time and have been told several different things about the spark plugs , some say u must fit the Iridium plugs , ( hope thats how its spelt ) and some say that you can just stick normal set in as it makes little differance, so what are the facts? what difference do the plugs make and in your opinions which should i use? thx Paul :D

Can't comment on the specific type of plugs but I do know that the set I have in my car have been in for 2 years now and I doubt they're special 'Iridium' ones! Wouldn't worry too much. :)

Decided to get the proper plugs fitted not that expensive £28.00 (platanum i think ) for the set so full service all filters changed oil changed, new set of front pads , rear offside brake cylinder leaking so replaced and all other bits, and a private mechanic only charged me 158.00 for the lot well pleased

A car fitted with well adjusted and maintained bog standard plugs will perform equally as well as a car fitted with expensive Iridium plugs. Iridium plugs just need less maintenance.

All the spark plug does is provide an ignition source for the charge in the cylinder (actually it has some use for providing cooling in the cylinder but not particularly relevant to this discussion). So long as you get a good spark it'll ignite well. A poor spark won't ignite properly giving you poor performance.

A good spark will ignite the charge but a better spark can't make the charge burn hotter/faster. Therefore expensive plugs won't give you a noticeable benefit over good decent plugs in good condition
