Modding An St182 3gse - How Much Power?

Hi everyone, just last week became the proud owner of a Gen5 celica GTi (bought for £500 with 12 months MOT :yahoo: ) and I love it!! its a lovely drive, and the engine is sweet!!

I understand the car has 158 bhp as stock, ive read through all other posts relating to increasing power and the general consensus seems to be 'its not worth the money' but this seems like a defeatist attitude to me!

I have a K&N 57i on order, this seems to be the logical first step to take. I actually work in a garage, so labour comes relatively cheaply for me, and I am wondering what the next step to take should be? I notice those nice people at fensport make lightweight crankshaft pulleys/power steering pulleys/flywheels, my question is this - what do these do? will these increase the power? If so by how much? has anyone ever tried these?

I'm assuming this kind of work could require an engine remap, which Im budgeting for as well, but how many ponies could I unleash through doing this? I dont really want to go for nos or engine swaps or anything, I just want to try and maximise what is under the hood already, If I could get 180 ponies I'd be a happy man :D

Comments and suggestions please!!

Thanks

Chris

Yo man, congrats on the purchase; that is sweet.

Okay, so you are going to get a K&N filter I assume, so you should go all the way and get bolt-ons. Go with a cold air intake system (with K&N filter), exhaust manifold (header), and cat-back exhaust system. These simple bolt-ons will had quite a few ponies, but not too many.

After you have completed all the bolt-ons, go with the remap. Your engine will be sucking in more air and that air will be leaving quicker, so the air/fuel mixtures will need to be adjusted. This will add many ponies to your ride, especially after completing the bolt-ons. This is the best way to go. Make sure you do the modifications and then a remap done custom for your specific mods.

Have fun with the car and make sure to buy quality parts. Go with bolt-ons, then remap. Enjoy :yahoo:

the 3sge is an already highly tuned engine , good luck getting much more out of it

To the best of my knowledge the pulleys just take some of the strain from the engine in running but don't actually give you any more power than you already have... Just deliver maybe a few more to the wheels.... If you want to take that route then I would uggest Vernier pulleys... You can get them at Demon Tweeks for the 3sge motor.. Just my 2 cents...

Had this predicimnet myself, i would just stick to suspension and exhuast. Lower it on decent springs and shocks, bigger anti roll bars , poly bushes etc.. my old celica handled really well

i put a superchips ikon onto it , bought from fensport made little differance in my opinion.

I decided GT4 was the best route for getting more power... but i loved my 182
