New Front Discs And Pade

JUST FOR INFO

Had new front pads and discs fitted after 2003 (23k) car failed MOT. Cost was £150 including VAT and fitting @ the Hi-Q Centre in Skipton. Initial quote was £176 but when I said I could buy discs for around £80 pair and pads for £30 manager agreed to drop his price.

Toyota put a new set of discs on the car when it was just 12 months old (we bought it new so we know its history). Last year - at its first MOT - the Toyota Garage said the front discs would need skimming soon...as they were rusting badly (we only do about 6,000 miles a year so the car does stand around a lot).

When the Hi-Q MOT tester showed me the discs I was shocked to see that although the discs looked OK on the outside...the inside face of both discs was as rough as the dark side of the moon!

I got my guide price for parts from: www.speedways.com ebcbrakesdirect.com and carparts-direct.co.uk

Halfords didn't list the discs and Wilco initially said £120 ish then after a few calls came up with a figure of around £78.

Hope this is of help to any member about to replace braking kit.

Regards

I've recently had to have front discs & pads for my 46k roadster. Service history shows they were changed at around 20k under warranty (previous to me owning it). I also had an advisory for the rears to be done too.

I have read that there is a Roadster weakness for discs, whether it's the genuine Mr T discs or the calipers or both I'm not sure, but the ones that came off my car were absolutely shot and I don't drive fast/brake hard. The new discs and pads are not toyota ones, so hopefully they should last a bit longer.

I think there are piccys of other peep's discs in the TOC somewhere, I'm sure others will shed some light on braking kits etc..

Yes a common fault I'm afraid.

I had my disc slimmed by Mr T last year (under warranty) but it just delays the inevitable :(

Just ordered a set of Front Disc/pads from HERE £75.12 inc del

That's an excellent price Les. Well done on your research!

I've made a note of the website...as I suspect I will be needing replacements - again - in the not too distant future.

I've usually fitted my own discs on vehicles. However, without a MK3 workshop manual was unsure what torque setting the caliper bolts should be. Are you able to post a torque setting figure?

Many thanks for responding Les - much appreciated.

Called in at Unipart, today, and asked for a price for front discs. Would you believe £39.95 (inc VAT) for a set. Needless-to-say I've now got them sitting in the garage for when I next need to replace them!

Living out in the sticks I have to make the most of my trips into town!! Yep, my wife's right, I do need to get out more!!

Thanks again - enjoy the sunshine and the Easter eggs & happy motoring...
