Unknown Warning Light On Dashboard

Just bought a gt-4 97 model last weekend. It's my first toyota and i'm thoroughly loving it. Unfortunately i'm not petrolhead and the car didn't come with a user manual and... a warning light has started to spring up, for what appears to be the first ten minutes of a journey then disappears. Can you tell me what it is?

I'm watching out for car handbooks, user manuals etc online so hopefully will have the knowledge grasped soon - it's just that the warning light is on now and i'm a bit jittery about it.

going by your pic its the engine management light.you,ll need to scan it to find the code to tell you whats putting this light on .an then doing the repairs accordingly to stop the light coming back on

you can buy a scanner but make sure it will read toyota codes.you have a socket the scanner plugs into and connects to the ecu{computer}and then reads any stored codes.you could go to a garage to get checked but ask how much first to read the code cos it may have to then go back to have the codes cleared and they may charge again

I experienced exactly the same, check your knocks sensor. Does your car intermittently go into a 'limp' mode? i.e total loss of power! Just a thot......

you don't need to buy a scanner. you just connect 2 terminals on the ecu with a piece of wire (paper clip or something) and count the number of times the light on the dash flashes - look up 'checking ecu codes' on the forum and you'll find the details. Seems easy, then you can post the result and the gt4 lads on here should be able to tell you whats likely the problem. At least you can go to the garage informed then or do a simple job yourself
