Yaris 1.0l

Hello there, i have a 55 plate yaris 1.0L and its had oil leaks since new. The first leak was identified by the dealer who said it was the camchain cover, this was supposed to have been repaired but after 11 visits back to the dealer it is still leaking, even after a modified cover was fitted. For some reason the sump has been re-sealed and we have now been told the head gaskit is leaking and going in for repair when they get the parts. Are we the only ones with oil leaks.

That is what the THREE YEAR warranty is for :)

I doubt it's a modified cover since they haven't modified it.

Problem with oil leaks is they're an absolute bugger to spot the actual leak spot (and dealers are particularly appauling at it). The engine can be leaking from one spot and it won't be obviously apparent till it appears somewhere else.

If they've taken the chain cover off it attaches directly to the sump so to reseal the chain cover you have to reseal the sump.

Personally I doubt it's a head gasket leak but just that the dealer hasn't repaired the chain cover correctly first time around.

Also, keep a record of the visits/work it's had done at the dealer and ideally get copies of the records from the dealer. If the problem continues outside of the warranty period you can use it to keep getting work done to the car until the problem is solved.

I have done 30-40 yaris headgaskets/timing chain covers/sump leaks over the last couple of years.

There was bullitin from Toyota about headgaskets leaking oil, when fitting the new metal gasket they advise using sealant along the timing chain side of the block to stop further leaks. Also the timing chain covers are known for leaking from the front/around the waterpump unless its a JAP built car of course ;)

Thanks for the info, it re-affirms there are quite a few yaris's with the same problems.

Was assured by the dealer and Toyota GB that the cover was a mod version. Will get the head gasket done on the 23rd april, hopefully this will be the end of the oil leaks. Thanks for your help.

Oh yes, there will be plenty of Yaris around that have had to be resealed :)

I never heard of any mods done to the timing chain cover as you mentioned.

I dont know if some dealerships think that the mating face should be perfectly flat (it isnt, there are 2 small dips in it where the head/headgasket/block all meet)

We had a Yaris that everytime it was sealed (headgasket/timing cover/sump) after a few miles the underside of the bonnet would be covered in oil. We got a timing cover machined down flat but this made no difference at all. I can remember what the eventual fix was as i was on holiday but it did get sorted.

Well the new head gasket was fitted and the camchain cover and sump re-sealed on the 23rd of april by Sims Toyota in Northampton, this is the 12th visit back regarding the oil leak and the car was returned to Sims at their request to check the work done on 18th june and all is well and no oil leaks at last. But while the car was there we asked them to re-fit the drivers door window seal as it was coming away from the frame, whilst doing this they scratched the paintwork around the area and had to keep the car overnight to repaint the damage. I have never come across a more incompetant bunch of so called mechanics in all my days on the road, its taken 18 months to repair an oil leak which is a common yaris problem and now when they try a simple job on the window seal, they trash the paintwork. :censor: Please avoid these people like the plague.

Thanks for your help.
