Headlamps And Breaklight

Hello friends,

I am fairly new to this site, or rather shall I say I found it only when I had problems with my Toyota (which is an unusual scene).

The problem is; the headlamps wouldnt turn up and so is the brake lamp on the drivers side. Amazingly the high beams are working, but its only the normal beam. When this happened, I was very sure its got nothing to do with the bulbs as its unlikely for three bulbs to get blown at once. I checked the fuses which are situated under the bonet and next to the stairing, they seem okay. I have also checked the rear brake lamp, it alright. Am pretty sure the headlamps are also alright although I couldnt get to them.

So guys any help on this matter please? I want to try everything before taking it to the car electrics.

Tha.

Brake Lights

If the fuse hade failed for your brake lights then both would not work. So it's not the fuse. The bulbs used are twin filament types and also act as rear side lights. Have you made sure that both filaments are intact?

Headlights

Do you mean that the MAIN BEAM doesn't work or the DIPPED BEAM (or both)?

The fuses for these are LH Fuse 26; RH fuse 27. The fuse box for these in in the engine compartment near to the radiator.

I know it is unusual for both lights to fail at once but is can happen. Removal of these bulbs is tricky.

Nearside:

You may have to remove the Battery to gain access.

Offside:

The Coolant expansion tank needs moving. This is 'clipped' in position. Get both hands underneath it and it will come free with an upward jolt.

Once access is gained remove the wiring connector. Some plugs have buttons on the side which must be compressed before the plug can be removed. Then there is a black abs plastic 'doughnut' ring. Twist off anti-clockwise/remove boot and you will be able to get at the spring holding the bulb.

Good Luck

Thanks.

I think its the main beam which is not working, I mean the beam that is supposed to be used while normal city driving at night.

I shall still try to gain access to the bulbs.

I had a problem with the Carina I bought recently. The dipped beam on both lamps kept failing when I moved the switch from sidelamps to headlamps. I found that the cap on the end of the switch had come loose & all I had to do was push it back into position for a permanent repair.

If this cures your headlamps I would suggest that the two faults are not related & the brakelight just needs a bulb.
