I'm thinking of buying the third one along and was wondering what you ladies and gents make of it? Is the processor any good? Can the graphics card be upgraded easily enough?

I'll mostly be using it for the internet and to store songs and to play a bit of Football Manager which doesn't require a super dooper graphics card!

Cheers

Hi Ryan......the problem with buying Dell PC's, is that only Dell hardware fits in them, so you can't buy a better graphics card, for instance, cos it won't fit. that is unless Dell has changed their PC's to be the same as the others, ask the salesman to be sure....otherwise it should do what you require.

Sounds like its using on board graphics. Depends if the mobo has a PCI-E slot!

I wouldnt bother if i was you mate.

The default cpu isn't very good so i'd upgrade that, and the default memory is 4x512MB so I'd change that to 2x 1024 (at no extra cost) which will leave you with 2 free memory slots for later upgrades. The default graphics is onboard but the machine does have a pci-express slot so you can grab a decent card at a later date. I'd personally upgrade the hdd too but I'm a bit of a storage freak so 160gb might be enough for your needs.

As for Dell only accepting proprietary parts, I don't think that is the case anymore. However some of their machines have small cases and therefore need low profile components but this looks like a variation on the BTX case so it should take full hight components. :)

Would I be better going for the 2nd PC along on that page? Is that a better processor?

Thanks again.

the problem with the second one is that it uses a slimline case and therefore you'd be limited by the graphics cards you could buy in the future. If you definitely want a dell then go for number 3 but during configuration upgrade to one of the dual core Pentiums 4s.

Ryan.. the home built one we discussed is probably going to be your best bet.. all you would need to add is the monitor, Speakers, mouse and keyboard if you want those renewed too.

The above is a fairly good system, and is slightly future proof for the time being

*future proof - as soon as something as manufactured it has been based on a design that was worked on upto a year ago.. so its allready out of date *

That third PC has no modem as standard!

That my friend, is a very good thing in this day and age.

My computer has a free-standing modem connected via a USB port so it would appear I don't need a built in 1 anyway or do I? :!Removed!:

If you have an external one, then you just plug it into your new pc. Just for clarity, is your modem a boradband modem or a 56k dial-up modem?

It's a broadband modem.

I've went for the computer that Davy suggested and he's also building it and setting it up for me. It's about time I had a decent PC! :)

It's a broadband modem.

And therein lies the confusion. When a company says they have an internal modem, they are talking about a 56k one, not a broadband one ;)
