Air Con Problem

Hi

I've got a 53reg Avensis T2, tried the air con today and it's not working. Press the air con button, but all it does is blow warm air. I can't even hear the pump start like i can on my celica....any idea what i can try, or test...

I'm not sure if it needs re-gassing, my celica is 1 year older and it's still ice cold. Also, any recommendations for garages in bristol area ?

Cheers

sounds like you have a gas leak, if there is no refrigerant the compressor will be quieter because there is no load on it. It needs to be checked by an AC engineer for refrigerant leaks, and to see if the compressor is running.

shouldnt be more than 100 quid , depending on whats found to be broken.

Just got the car back from the garage, they wanted £590 to fix this :crybaby:

Apparently there is a leak, and the parts alone costs £300. !Removed! hell :crybaby:

Just my luck, road tax, insurance, now this. Well pee'd off

OMG.....did you pay for the estimate? if so, get a list of the parts and labour, and post it, just as a matter of interest

It is feasible unfortunately. The compressor and condensor are not cheap items to replace. :( That's why I use my aircon at least a couple of times a month, even during winter. Biggest problem with winter is that aircon won't kick in unless it's 5c or more outside the car but there are always days within a month that it does in the British climate. No idea how they go on in climates that are very hot in summer but very cold in winter (ie remaining below 4c for several weeks).

If you put it on the windscreen it will come in below 5 degrees, well it does in my Camry anyway, afterall A/C is very effective for demisting the windscreen so I use it a lot in the winter.

Hope this isn't too late for you, but I know of an aircon specialist in the Bristol area. I paid around £300 for a big overhaul of my previous Mondeo's system (think I had new condensor, accumulator and some other bit(!) plus a regas obviously); all done in my office car park.

Anyway, the guy was very efficient and knew AC inside out. I'm sure he would be cheaper than the dealer. Here's the website: http://www.gocool.co.uk/

Thanks! The quote i got was from a independent garage..Halls in Yate. I heard from a fellow Celica owner after that they are known for being expensive. I will give gocool a call and see what they suggest. All that needs replacing is a pipe, not condenser or compressor. Thanks again.

Do let us know how it goes with gocool - be interesting to know if they beat your previous quote.

Yup! Gocool rocks! The guy who run the company is call George, very helpful, friendly, knowledgable and most importantly honest. His charges are fair, and he's done a top job at half the price. Charge me £255 for new toyota high pressure pipe, fitting, regassing and inspection. The other place Halls of Yate, wanted £500.....I know who I will be using again. Thanks for the recommendation bristolmotorspeedway.

All working now, and hopefully should not need any more work soon.

Ah yes, George, I remember the name now. Top guy, as you say - he seemed to know everything there was to know about aircon and the strengths and weaknesses of every model.

Glad the suggestion was helpful.
