Hi there, Bought my Yaris last year been fine, up till yesterday when the gears started playing up, ie when in nuetral its sometises not possible to put it in gear (Ie when driving:S) and once even though it was in gear it was just reving and no power to drive the vehicle forwrds. then ist seems to sort it out and It drives like a dream.

Can anybody tell me if this is a known problem and if there is anything I can do to sort it in the short term or do I need a complete new one ... (cries)

hey, i drive what appears to be an identical yaris (i drive a silver one). this problem occurs occasionally with me. it seems to happen when you put the car in 1st from neutral quickly to set off. because its an auto clutch you cant change any gear quickly (as im sure you know), same goes for putting into neutral. and make sure it is fully into gear, sometimes it can go in gear but not be fully in gear so best to take it out of gear and then try again.

often i start in 2nd as it pulls away well when there is a max of 2 people in the car.

hope this helps

Jay

I would not have bothered looking for a web site about Yaris Freetronic if I had been satisfied with the responses from my local Toyota dealer. My 7 year old Yaris has needed 2 replacement clutch actuators already, only done 55,000 miles. Then yesterday the gear lever went 'floppy' as my wife was about to pull out onto a main road.

It seems that the Freetronic problems are not new. I searched on 'Ask Jeeves' for "freetronic" and looked at 2 interesting sites: HonestJohn.co.uk and Toyota Imports Forum (Yaris - clutch issues), they certainly did not seem enthusiastic about the Freetronic. Now I know why Toyota do not do it anymore!

The Toyota dealer did not give me any warnings or advice regarding failure of the Freetronic.

I now know that it was an expensive mistake buying this car.

Do you check the level of the fluid in your automatic clutch system every few days? It is not monitored by the warning light! On both ocassions when my actuator failed there was no fluid in the system so the car was immobile, once was out in the country, the other forunately was in town. Towed to the garage and half a day lost!

Toyota superseded the Freetronic Yaris with the MMT (Multi Mode Transmission)

This system is much improved and is still available on the "New Yaris" with the 1.3 litre engine
