Accelerator Fails On 2ltr Diesel

:( having just bought my avensis 2litre diesel (2003) shuts down to just tick over, (no power) after about a mile from starting cold, first thing in morning. the engine remains ticking over but the accelerator will not function, alarm light comes up on display panel. I switch engine off and restart engine and all runs ok, but alarm light remains lit. this has happened a couple of times. the garage said it was the fuel idler valve sticking, replaced it, but 2 days later fault re-occurs and now car is back in garage. has anyone have previous experience of this, what is causing the malfunction and what is the cure. having looked at previous postings, faulty glow plug and fuel problems are suggested. Help please, local garage experts seem to be baffled. maybe toyota dealership should be contacted. the garage is being helpful but problem remains.

Sorry to mention this but is there a chance that it has been fuelled with petrol ?

car came with a full tank of diesel, so as far as I know, no petrol added

  • 2 weeks later...

Sorry for delay in reply. (hols). Had exactly the same problem but no fault light showed. Toyota drove car for a few days with diagnostics attached to car. problem occured again and showed as faulty glow plug on diagnostics. they replaced all glow plugs under warranty and car is now perfect after two months driving thankfully.

Woodie. thanks for the glow plug info. But garage has moved on the problem and sent the car back to Mr T. They say it needs new injectors and associated pipes. all to be fitted under warantee from my dealer. I hope that cures the problem. I suspect that my dealer run the car out of fuel before I bought it, just a throw away comment from the sales guy when I went to collect it. Therefore suspect the subsequent sucking up of sludge from the tank has made a mess. i just hope it will be cured when I get it back. bought the car 3 weeks ago and actually only driven for 5days between visits to dealer to sort problem. Any idea in whats involved with changing injectors? I just hope that they know what they are doing and not ruining the cars future reliabilty.

Had the car back now for three days and after 150 miles (touch wood) it is OK. It was explained that one of the injectors, or injector return fuel pipe was 'leaky' ,causing the aforesaid problem. All injectors and associated fuel lines were replaced, so hopefully thats that. Any further problems I'll keep posted. (PS they also,un-prompted, replaced both headlamps as one was suffering condensation) All under the 6 month AA warantee. Thanks for all replies.

NOW driven for two weeks and averaging 48mpg over about 700 miles. looking good and confidence growing.
