Weird Noises

I've got a 02 CTS 70k miles, had it a year now, what a car, great fun.

Anyone noticed these weird noises? Please :help:

1) When you pull away from cold start, a crunch noise, sounds like the clutch.

2) When you come off the accelerator, at both high and low revs, a grindish noise, sorry not a lot to go on, hard to describe.

Gearbox bearings. My whole gearbox was rebuilt under warranty after only about 12k on the clock but the symptoms were there from about 8k onwards! :o It's a known problem so didn't worry me, but I'm afraid it's gonna cost you about £800-£1k to fix if it is the same prob as yours won't be done under warranty!!!

Thanks for the reply.

The gearbox bearings, is that for both issues or just one of them?

Is the £800/£1k for a rebuild or new box?

From what I remember on the job card it was about £1k including labour to repair the box. I'm not sure about the first issue. It's hard to understand without experiencing it. There are other rattles/problems that might cause this - one was the auxiliary belt tensioner bearing which is a known issue and was replaced under warranty too on my car at 8k miles...

If you do a search for "noise" then the engine braking noise seems to be pretty common. I noticed it slightly when test driving mine but after reading about it on here decided it probably wasn't anything to worry about and bought it anyway! Debatable whether it's a "characteristic" of the car or not, but seems like it probably is. Mine doesn't do it particularly often.

As for the crunch, not sure probably most likely to be the clutch if it sounds like it, certainly wouldn't be that unusual to have clutch issues looking at the old posts.

Other thing I thought of is if it's the brakes? If by cold start you mean after a few hours/days it might just be the rust build up on the discs.

A motor mechanic told me that the clinking noise you get when setting of after a cold start on a CTS is the sound of the VSC starting up.Ive only had my 2005 CTS for a couple of weeks now and I here a clinking noise from a cold start every time.It does sound the same every time I here it and it sounds controlled.

Hope this helps .....

Hi Guys thanks for the replies.

Noise 1) It's not the brakes, i've heard the noise of brakes releasing before after a build up.

I don't think its the VSC, it definately sounds like a crunch from the clutch or gearbox , it happens at the point of pulling away for the first time just before you come right off the clutch.

After reading the previous topics/posts about engine braking, it sounds like its definately that problem ive got. Sounds like its a new clutch and gearbox! Expensive! :censor:

Is it something to really worry about or do i need the get it sorted?

My clinking sound happens the same as you say, just after taking of for the first time, but mine happens in reverse as well as forward and sounds the same both ways .Mine happens after I have released the clutch and have travelled a few feet and feels like its coming from the front wheel direction.Again I quote the mechanic telling me it was to do with the VSC or traction control enabling itself I cant remember exactly what he told me as it was in a bar and I was half cut if you know what I mean.

Try in reverse and see if it happens and get a car mechanic to experience it for himself.

Mr Toyota could possibly tell you a load of crap and sting you if he thinks that you think there is a serious problem ,so get an independant source if you can first and see if mr Toyota tells you the same thing is wrong.

My car has only 16500 miles and is 2 year old this week and I would hope to hell it wasnt my clutch

I was not worried about this as I thought it was a normal thing for the car,let us all know what the outcome is as I still have a year warranty left.I will get mine looked at as well and will keep you posted...

Pages 180 to 183 in your Corolla owners manual mention that there is a noise from the engine compartnent when the VSC is in self check mode and it says the same for the TRACTION CONTROL.

READ THES PAGES YOURSELF

THIS MAY BE IT

i think point 1 is the VSC calibration. It can be quite loud and offputting, mine sounds like the suspension bottoming out or something large snapping.

Point 2 read the post in the other topic.

I would have thought your clutch would have been done by 70K, as the TSport does eat them. Look through the service book and see which garage did most of the work, check with them if the clutch has been done, not just the plate but the thrust bearing too.

Hi,

i have driven both the facelift (which i own) and a pre facelift on test drive...

Both have these same problems. i find the crunch only happens when

1.the engine is cold

2.once and when you selected 1st and moved off it crunches just as you have gone past the biting point.

scaping

The constant scraping i noticed was only happening when i had taken my foot of the gas pedal to slow down without braking , then if you gradually push the gas to maintain a steady spped you can hear it stop.

so that could be the brakes maybe?

but it has been the same for 15k whilst ive had it and its nearly doen 40k in its life so it cant be that bad surely

vsc

you can hear this as a click/clunk quite quickly after you first turn the igition on and then turn the engine on.

it isnt as loud or as noticable as the crunch from the clutch when you first move off.

I hadn't noticed the VSC clunks and clicks but I've been listening out for them and can confirm mine does them too! :P
