Flywheel Again!

Can anyone confirm that Toyota now recognise that the flywheel is a problem and will pick up the bill. Doing a search of the flywheel problem brings up HELIPADHEADS old post that says Toyota are aware of the problem and will pay for failures. That was last September but the VOSA website still does not list duel mass flywheels on its list of recalls for the Rav4. I have inserted his old post to save you doing a search. ]GOOD NEWS

Thanks to this forum I managed to diagnose the failure of the dual mass flywheel in our four year old 52 plate, 36000 mile D4D. Our local dealer confirmed the fault when the car was serviced and advised that the clutch and freewheel needed replacement. They also said that it would be in the order of £1500 to£1600 but would see if Toyota UK would help or bear the whole cost - given that the car was of low milage, age and that it had always been serviced by Toyota. Within a couple of days we were advised by the garage that Toyota had a recall with regards to this failure and the clutch and dual mass flywheel would be replaced free of charge.

We have today collected our RAV after the two day replacement of these parts. Toyota have fitted a revised flywheel (it has a new part number) and a new clutch - waranteed for 3 years.

The car is now notably different - smoother when pulling away, no horrible squeeling noise or grunting at max power and the engine vibration we had become used to is no longer present.

They know about it as they did my 53 plate with a new clutch and flywheel assembly before they sold it to me (Toyota approved used) and that was 13 months ago.

They will not admit to the problem even though so many have been going wrong....took Renault ages to back down to the Clio Bonnet catch...not as expensive but along the same lines......

Toyota wont pay for it....and I'm just worried now when mine might go...on 70k ... saying that having some issues with high pressure fuel pump (just as expensive as DMFW) :crybaby::crybaby::crybaby:

How could HELIPADHEAD be so confident that Toyota would accept liability. Do you think his case was a one off?

i called my local toyota garage and asked them exactly what was the score on this flywheel they took some details from me and called me back.

they say that the problem was pre 2002 models and that they extended the warranty on these cars to 5 yrs or 8ok . and that all post 2002 cars have a revised clutch/ flywheel and there for the standard warranty only applies.i have an o4 reg just coming up to 3 yrs old and must say havn't read any faults at this age but have read about 52 and 03 plates maybe others could call their dealers and see what they say.

also if you extend the warranty about £600 and the flywheel goes due to the clutch then they will not pay out .

I don't see how they can say that when my local garage was happy to show me the service record detailing the new clutch and DMFW when I asked, this wasn't a part i'd insisted on them sorting, this was when they got the veichle as a part x. I haven't extended my warranty and have approaching 50k on the clock (well 7.5k thanks to them relacing my odo for no good reason!). That said if the clutch or DMF went today (13 months after it was done) i'd be making my case to Toyota... they need to sort this out.
