Some Gen 6 Questions

Hello all, first post here :!Removed!: B)

Been driving my celica GT since november now and i love it, but i have a few questions.

Whats this hose? Is it just a breather?

hosething.JPG

Next, if i drive the car hard im getting 16MPG, are they really that thirsty? the best I can manage from it driving very sensibly (5th gear by the time im at 35mph) is 26MPG. Im putting £10 in everyday!

I was reading about changing the lambda sensor, or buying a cleaning fuel additive I seen on eBay, normally i wouldn't but it i seen others saying it was good on other forums.

Finally, just today, when braking to a stop the engine is cutting off and coming back on, it once did this before but it was due to the Battery terminal, and i fixed it, any ideas what it is now?

Thanks for looking :)

Not too sure about the pipe but there must be something wrong to be getting consumption like that. Over 10k or so and only filling the tanks from brim to brim I am getting between 26 and 34MPG. Lately I have found that it's not necessarily more efficient to drive around in high gears at low revs. i.e. on the motorway I'm fairly sure 80mph is more economical than 60mph, despite the exponentially increasing drag.

That pipe I think goes into a smaller airbox to get filtered air:

And from the sounds of things, the first thing I'd try for your MPG and engine cut is replacing the lambda o2 sensor and resetting the ecu (pull the smaller 'efi' fuse for about 10 seconds).

Hey, thanks for replying, i think i seen where that hose went, and am trying intake cleaner and redex injector cleaner for my MPG. Beside where that hose went i found this other probe looking thing, anyone tell me what it is?

Thanks again.

Thats the air temp sensor. Plugs into the air filter if you have a K&N or if not, the air filter box or intake hose i would say.

I can see you've got the airbox on the right. You'll need to open that up. Unplug that sensor and put it in the hole at the back of the airbox, then close up the box and plug that sensor in.

Thanks alot guys you've been a great help, im sure that air sensor being out of place could aid my rapid fuel comsumption! Will tinker around with it tomorrow, try to figure out where it goes.

I know the 98 GT is lower BHP, but recently I've been getting from 36 to 40mpg from my 98- crazy isn't it!! I don't rev her much, and I only let loose when she's warmed up and I'm on a safe, wide road. My last one was a 94, and it was under 30mpg (down to 26 sometimes). And my MR2 was around 30 to 33 (1990, 3SGE).

Toyota really did make the 98 more fuel efficient, and a little more torque lower down as well.
