Clonk On Full Left Lock?

Sometimes, not always, on full left lock on steering there's clonking sound coming from the left wheel area, i know i've seen some posts somewhere about surfs and problems with steering on full lock but can't remember where i read them. The surf is a 1991 2.4TD auto and any help or pointers in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. If anyone needs anymore info to try to help diagnose the problem i'll do my best to answer any questions you may want to ask.

Thx in advance, L3m.

It may be but i don't think so, the front shock on the left side has a small dent on the outer part which shows signs of rubbing the inner part slightly but as i say i don't think that would cause a clonking noise.

Hi mate

Have you checked the plastic caps that sit on top of the bolt heads that act as steering stops?

There are 2 each side and when the caps wear through the steel on steel contact makes a butt awful noise, especially when the Surf is on any kind of incline (multi-storey ramps etc).

Worth a look

Hi there,

I have picked up a 3.0 TD surf today and had the same sounding noise...... I have checked with a valuable friend and RAC tech and after greasing the 'bump stops' the noise was still there. His advise was that it is probable dry joints or suspension.... if CV joints etc... look ok. To cure he said to cover all upper and lower arms, suspension etc... in grease/mix of old oil and parafin/wd40 any form of lubrication really. I intend to do next couple of days and should sort it. If still doesn't go away it could be something more sinister and to check with a close mechanic! not one that will rip you off saying ooh its this or ooh its that......... Most likely simple and no need to worry too much tho!!

Greasing the stops is good but you need to check if the plastic caps on the stops have worn through. They just prise off the end of the bolt heads. They're about £3 each from Toyota, but they don't last forever. You have to take them off because its hard to tell if they've worn through with them in situ. They might not even be on the bolt heads any longer!

Have alook, then swap as needs be, then grease

here you go. The bolt head (yellow circle) rubs onto the arrowed area.

The plastic caps go over this bolt head - 2 per side.
