Noise At Speed

When I drive my new D4D at speeds of 60-70mph and above, there is a sort of resonance or humming, which sounds for all the world as if I am driving on a ribbed surface or knobbly tyres. Tyre pressures are all as they should be, and it happens on every kind of road surface, from very smooth to very rough, although it is more noticeable on smooth surfaces because of the absence of road noise.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Not noticed on mine which has Bridgestones on.

I checked the tyre pressures the other day and was surprised that they had lost so much pressure. One was down to 17 psi but didn't look under inflated. Have you checked the pressures?

Regards.

Hi,

I've had a similar problem with my 02 D4D and found by holding the gearstick whilst in 5th gear the noise stops  I took it in to be checked and I was told that it was probably due to worn plastic bushes within the housing - £140.00 to replace - have decided to hold off for now as garage confirmed not dangerous.

This morning, whilst driving to work, I thought I heard a motor bike or "boy-racer" approaching an about to pass me - or so it sounded. Looked in the mirrors and nobody. It wasn't loud, but consistent - as though the "bike" was 100 yards or so behind. I was doing about 70 on a rural dual carriageway at the time. Switched off the radio, it wasn't that; changed gear (6th to 5th), no change; moved lanes (different road surface), no change; came to a hill, so freewheeled, no change; blipped accelerator, no change.

At that point I caught up with other traffic as I approached the town and then turned off onto a cross-country B road. When I was able to return my attention to the noise it had gone.

My imagination? A new military stealth motorbike? A one-off resonance? I'll see what happens driving home tonight and again tomorrow.

Must be the same stealth military motorbike that occasionally follows me around, Steve. Sometimes it's there, sometimes it isn't. Very strange. Trouble is with these intermittent phenomena that of course it doesn't do it when you take it to the garage.

The other thing I notice is that the gearlever vibrates a bit in 4th but not in any of the other gears, but the humming/droning noise occurs in 5th and 6th. Perhaps I am just being over-sensitive with my brand-new car. Although the last time I "heard a strange noise" and my husband didn't believe me, we were overtaken by one of the wheels of our own trailer shortly afterwards.

I'll see if and how it develops and if it starts doing it consistently I'll take it to the garage.

I had a similar problem, humming noise was driving me mad ! Took it to Toyota and they changed the prop shaft ! The noise was still there, took it back eventually found that the Tyres had uneven wear after changing all 4 tyres the noise dissapeared when I put the old ones back the noise came back.

I am now looking for tyres well reccommended and a lot more quiet than the ones I have ! So my advice would be to have a look at the wear on your tyres. Any body tell me where and which tyres to buy ???? :crybaby:

At least if it is the tyres it is not too worrying. I think there has been some debate about tyres on this forum. The choice seems to be quite limited if you want to stick to the manufacturer's recommended size, and if you change to a different size I think you can fall foul of your insurance company.

Try this: http://www.tyretest.com. There are consumers' reviews on lots of tyres there.
