Celica Fob Problem

I've got hold of another fob for my 1998 Celica (as when I bought the car it only came with one key and one fob).

It's the RTT/D/X1123 / Part No 08191-00880

I've seen quite a range of methods for reprogramming the fob to work on my car, but none seem to work.

So far I've tried:

- Removing batteries, making sure it goes dry, then holding the button for 10 seconds while standing next to the car

- Trying to find the ECU (checking behind the glove box and under the steering wheel) but not being able to find a reset button to push or hole to put a paper clip through in either the immobiliser ECU or the other ECU to then hit the button

- Jumping up and down and doing a rain dance

I'm really enjoying owning a Celica so far; having successfully rewired the stereo to iso connection after the previous owner made a mess of it, getting the old cd changer and cabling out, fixing a dent in the door by stripping down the trim and pushing it from the other side, touching in some paint, etc.

According to the manual, my alarm is a TVSS III.

If anyone has any clues how to program this fob, I'd really appreciate it.

I have a Kenwood mini disc head unit and cd changer set going for free if anyone can help!

To be honest I don't know if it can be done. The method of resetting the fob by taking the Battery out - just resync's the car with the fob - you can't do that with someone elses fob otherwise I would be able to walk up to any celica with my fob, reset it and open up the doors. The Key fob would somehow need programming into the alarm ECU probably by plugging some specialised equipment in. Probably a trip down to Toyota with a pocketful of cash!

Might even be cheaper to have a new alarm put in - something like a Toad Cat 1

I had read that having the key in the ignition would let it reprogram it - but I guess you're right - it must be a bit harder.

Toyota want around £40 to setup the FOB - though not sure if they'll be happy doing it with my 2nd hand one from eBay!

i've got the exact same problem mate!

when i bought my SR, it came with one key and one fob. the fob didn't even work til the other day when i read on here that you could re-sync it using the Battery method (now it works like a dream, and from distance!) - however if you wanted a spare key you have no choice but to get it from the toyota dealership as it's a transponder key so it's got a chip inside which is linked to the immobiliser, so you have to buy the toyota key and can't just pop to the local key cutters for a £4.99 copy! clever but !Removed! annoying. the bloke who had it before thought you could just get a key cut, so i've got this spare key which just opens the doors and glove box - dead handy! i think the price for a new key at my dealers was quoted around £80 - tidy.

as for the fob, i can't see them having a problem with you going to them with your eBay purchase and asking them to reprogram it? surely not. best to ring them and ask first cos if they have got an issue with it, just go to them with the "this is how it came when i bought the car" excuse...

good luck, let me know how you got on!

I gave up and booked it in Toyota.

I got the key from them for £22.54 + VAT, and the fob I already got from eBay for £17.50.

Will post again when I get the final bill!
