Hello everyone, just joined the forum so thought I'd introduce myself....

John, living in Yorkshire (Gods own county), and on my 5th and 6th Toyota since 1982.

Started off trading in a MkI Escort for a 1980 Corolla - good car but with less performance than a dead slug. The only good thing it had over the Escort was the reclining seats B) That was replaced by a 2.0 Celica - another good car but a bit of a handful going around fast corners with a boot full of stuff, talk about rear-end drift!

Traded that in for a 2.8 Celica Supra - could then go round the same corner with a boot full of stuff nearly 10mph faster with no problem - thank you Lotus for sorting the suspension. Had some epic drives in that car and at one point 'yumped' it for over thirty feet at 80mph, landed on all fours without a complaint apart from my dad who hit his head on the roof  Still miss that car, it got traded in for a Volvo (sorry). By that time though I'd got a second Corolla, still a nice car and a little bit faster than the first one - could now give a dead slug a run for its' money, but was as interesting as a wet Sunday in Milton Keynes....

That got traded in for a Carina E (which I still have), lots of space in the back for my fishing tackle at last but with the acceleration of a 3-toed sloth; then the Volvo got rear-ended by a Rover which enabled me to buy an Avensis 2.0 VVTi - almost as fast as the Celica Supra but it doesn't aquaplane as much! Thinking of trading in the Carina now but no idea what to choose next, the only thing I know is that it will probably be Toyota. Not interested in Chelsea-tractors (4x4's) or tiny cars (they will not be able to carry my fishing tackle and still seat two passengers). Have been yearning for another Celica though so who knows?

Hobbies include fishing (as if you haven't already guessed!), reading, photography and yumping cars for over 30 feet  ;)

Thank you very muchly JB, I'm sure I'll like it on here :)

Yumping is a rallying term (I used to do a bit of that in my youth, but never in my own cars - I'm not that dumb  ). It's when you go over a hump in the road so fast that suddenly you're not wearing out your tyres anymore....

3 months after getting my MR2 Turbo i went through exactly the same experience and to say I crapped myself was an understatement as im sure those who saw my face afterwards would tell you. I was in shock for a bit as really thought i was going to die!

Back on topic, I have been through 4 Toyota's within 3 years so im catching up to your tally (thankfully none of them written off) and can totally agree about the Celica being a bit on the wolloy side.

Very nice history of Toyota cars you have and by far my fav has to be your old Celica Supra which i presume was a 2.8? You can pick them up for pennies these days as i saw one for sale for about £450 so always an option for a weekend car.

Welcome to the club though.. im sure with your history you will have a lot to share...

Thanks for the welcome chaps :) Do I detect a slight Yorkshire/Lancashire rivalry here? If so, it's only because we're on the right side of the Pennines.... :yahoo:

We chose to go Japanese simply because all the Brit cars we've had (mostly Ford) were as reliable as an MP's election promise (with the exception of the Escort), and Italian cars just didn't appeal - rust-buckets the lot of 'em.

The Celica I had was the early 80's model, little sister to the Celica Supra 2.8 (you are correct Fizz ;) This was one of the early ones with the digital dash). I'm wondering if it's still out there now....

got some knowledge of cars i bet!!! mmmmmmm

hello mate!!!

Unfortunately my knowledge of cars now consists of motoring history and driving them. When we had Brit cars I used to be pretty good at keeping them on the road, but since discovering Toyotas in the early 80's most of that knowledge has been forgotten :( That's one of the downsides of driving cars with a well-deserved reputation for reliability I suppose. Mind you, I did wear out the engines on the first Corolla and the Celica, and sheared the prop-shaft on the Supra

Then there was the time the timing belt went on the Supra whilst I was on a roundabout doing about 10mph, when only moments before I'd been racing a Vauxhall Calibra down a dual carriageway at.... well.... a somewhat naughty speed :naughty: No damage to the valves so I was lucky, £200 to have the belt replaced and a quick service and everything was fine. Since then we've always had timing belts replaced well before the recommended mileage, better to be safe than sorry. That was only one of two times the Supra let us down on a journey in about 7 years of ownership.
