Front Windscreen Replacement

I had my front windscreen replaced by Autoglass a fortnight ago and ever since it has been creaking and 'twittering' as I drive along. I was told by Autoglass this was not unusual as glue can take a week or two to set properly. I am not convinced and before I get them to replace it I was wondering if anyone had a similar experience.

thanks

The body has almost no lateral strength in it until the windscreen is glued in. Its like an empty cardboard box that you can easily deform it into a parallelogram until you fold over the ends. It therefor does resist a large amount of flexing but the body does still twist and it will creak if there is any fragments of glass trapped between it and the facia or trim.

See if you can find any and fish them out with a steel rule or similar. Check also in the demister vents. Failing that leave it until their predicted 2 weeks is up and take it back to them. Otherwise it will drive you maaaad

hi i,m a windscreen fitter (not autoglass) the only time i had a problem with creaking was on a subaru

it was caused by the glass pushed in to far at bottom and rubbing on dashboard, is there a gap between

scuttle panel and bottom of glass ? to be fair to autoglass the bonding material does take couple of weeks

to cure right through and when it is cured the screen shouldnt move anyway

I'd a windscreen replaced by Autoglass some time ago. We left the car in the garage as it was having repairs following a bit of vandalism so I never experienced the creaking bit. What I did find is that the adhesive in the top left of the windscreen was insufficient and it took me to remove the whole dashboard to trace where the water in the footwell was coming from as it ran down behind the plastic fascias. I managed to do a fix on it until the windscreen gets replaced again - a small crack might lead to me 'having' to claim a new screen!

Thanks for all comments and good call 2.2 D4D. I couldn't see anything obviously wrong so I got Autoglass back after leaving it almost three weeks and fortunately one of their more experienced fitters turned up. Like 2.2 D4D he had experienced this once before and suggested I go for a drive after removing scuttle panel and it was fine. So he gave the glass and the panel a thorough clean ( not sure what fluid he used ) and therefore achieved a really good seal / bond when refitted. Problem solved. Thanks again.

Can I just ask Dav - does the scuttle plate fit properly against the windscreen or do you have any gaps? Mine has a gap left and right but fits snug in the middle, if its supposed to be like that all the way across I may take it off and refit it. Took it to Toyota but they said all was fine but it just seems a bit odd.

Cheers

Just had a check. Looking down the scuttle plate fits snugly all the way across except for a less than 1/2" gap at either end where it is shaped to extend out halfway over the vertical rubber trim of the screen. Hope this helps.
