According to Toyota my 1998 Corolla SR came from the factory with 109bhp - that's the non vvti 4A-FE engine. It now has a LOT more than that - but I did an engine transplant with a supercharged 4A-GZE engine from a Japanese Toyota Levin GT-Z. All the details of my trials and tribulations are on my website.

The 4A-FE engine is Toyotas economy version of the 4A series. The 4A-GE is the performance version - this was put in the Mk1 MR2, the Corolla GTi and lots of other cars. The 4A-GZE is the supercharged version which was only sold in Japan in the MR2 and Levin and also in the USA in the MR2.

If you want more info your best bet is to google toyota 4a-fe - there's loads of stuff there to read.

ive got the 4A-FE engine. is that any good?

There is a yes and no answer to that, Yes it is well known that the 4A-FE is not as performance orientated as the 4A-GE however as F heads go the AE111 corolla SR was the last production car to receive a 4A series engine. So your SR has the best designed F head, high inlet valve angles for optimum air flow and fuel infectors remoted to the inlet manifold. so i agree with ae111sr on the priciple that; these engine were quoted as 109 BHp when first built so the original F head has that much, I'd hazard that this has a fraction more. The F head is most imprssive when looking a torque, such a large flat torque curve and a well tuned induction kit (i found it needed to be slightly longer than the original airbox piping) creates a really drivable car with loads of pull from 1500 all the way through to 3200 were it really gets going. I personally am going to try and make the best damn F headed engine possible whilst remaining practicle. Originally i was going to turbo charge it but then i ran into a whole series of issues to deal with the cars lighter internals. So N/A it is, hope this helps in some way.
