Fuel Pump Annoyance When Filling With Diesel

You know when the fuel pump handle clicks and shuts off the fuel when you are just about full at the pumps, well, this happens continuosly when I'm filling our Diesel Verso, probably every litre.

Its really annoying...

I've tried putting the nozzle in at various depths and angles and it still happens and at various pumps and various stations.

Is this common on these cars? I've never had this problem before, especially happening as often as it does with this car.

I know it is really annoying and yes I have had the same type of problem but I think its down to the pumps rather than the car as when I fill at some stations its okay and not at others.

It was the same same with the Avensis I had ! I always complain now to the petrol station saying the pump is faulty I do not know if they take any notice

I suppose it could be if your car is parked on a slope and the slope is towards the filler cap may cause it but I cannot say I have noticed that .

I can't say I've had the problem on my Verso, it doesn't cut out until the tank is nearly full & then it takes a bit of coaxing to get the last couple of litres in.

Many years ago in my youth I working in a petrol station & in those dim & distant days by far the worst was the mark 1 Escort Estate - used to take ages to fill one of them up!

This has happened at numerous different stations and different pumps and the car is always on flat ground

as I was filling up today I remembered this topic.

must be something related to the number of liters/gallons per second the pump is able to thrown out and the fact that (effectively) the fuel intake is tight, real tight..

Had this happen consistently on previous petrol Punto Mk1, But never in 17777 miles from new in my Verso T3 D-4D

Tried putting fuel in a bit slower, instead of pumping in as fast as you can, try putting it in slower. remember that the pump itself detects back pressure from the tank, if the 'neck' of the fuel tank cant cope with 1litre/sec dont pump it in that fast, you'll find it quicker to pump in slower and not have any shutoff than trying to pump in at lightspeed and failing miserably.
