Avensis Td Fumes

Hello alll I own a 1998 Avensis td liftback with 150k on the clock. recently I fitted a phone kit to it. When I renoved the trim on the A pillar there was black soot at the top where it meet the roof cloth. There was also black around the light over the rear view mirror. I have begun to notice fumes inside the car. I have inspected the exhaust for leaks but found none. The rear door is tight when shut THE SEAL is in good condition with no cracks or rips. Does anyone know where the fumes are coming in ???
