Dont just lower it on springs. It will ruin your shocks and then they will need replacing eventually.

I haveny lowered my E12 yet but I have been informed that tein basic suspension kit does a nice job of lowering the car without adversly affecting the ride comfort. Living in Ireland so Iv no idea of the UK cost but I doubt itl cost under £100. save a little more and get the full kit.

As for insurance it varies with different companies, your better off ringing 'em some time if your worried bout it.

he said he doubted it'll cost less than £100 and he'd be right. Basic springs are roughly £130 although you can get some g-max ones from eBay for considerably less. If you keep the springs at a 35mm or lower drop then you can use the existing shocks without too many problems in the near future, so it's probably what you'll have to do as you're on a limited budget. I actually had to give up 8 months of my no claims bonus when I declared my springs and moved to another insurer because the company I was with flat out refused to insure me (even at a higher premium). So if you are going to do it, call your insurance company beforehand and see what their policy is.

Sure. If you don't want to tell them that's fine. But if you have a crash, you can pretty much kiss goodbye to them covering you. So a) you'll probably lose the car in a serious crash and have to finance a new one yourself and B) if you hit someone who requires medical treatment, then your parents will probably have to remortgage their house to try and cover the medical costs.

So your choice really but I wouldn't - and haven't - risked it.

Not really from a suspension point of view. The CTS suspension is pretty bad considering the sort of power the engine pushes out. Whichever E12 corolla you get, the suspension is lacking. Admittedly the facelift has been lowered by 15mm over the pre-facelift (from memory) and the compressor was then lowered a further 10mm making the best of a bad situation.
