hiya all,

some advise wanted...

I test drove a jap import 1994 celica GT4 and noticed a few issues of concern and was hoping someone can advise me how bad these are..

1. when jacked up and jiggled front drivers side wheel has a lot of play in it also steering wheel vibrates at around 70-80pmh..owner said he curbed it.

2. slight noise coming from speedometer plastic cover ( rattles at around 70mph)...which is not to bad, however i have heard of owners changing the console with a spare one from a scrapi to save clocking up the mileage.

3. no under seal

4. and finally as i went around a roundabout approaching a straight stretch of road i heard a clunk from the back ( sounded like it came from the rear left of of the car) , which i couldn't replicate no matter how many roundabouts i went around.

also needs a cam belt change :(

any advise or direction would be appreciated

Ja

1. Vibration wise sounds like the wheels need balancing, what sort of play do you mean, along the car inward and outward or turn as though steering was loose.

2. Once you get one and live with it for a while you'll hear rattles coming from everywhere, if the steering is vibrating with the wheels at 70 then I suspect it's due to that as it sits right on top of the steering collum. If you worried about it being clocked look over the car generally you can tell from the wear and tear weather the mileage is real or not.

3. Normal, would suggest doing though as UK winters can be pretty harsh on underbody.

4. Could be rear ARB bushes, or if you let off as you hear it possibly rear diff mount.

give ian a ring at TR&D (0115 9787844 number changes next week) he is in hucknall, notts. hell give the car a throrough check over and give you a report of any items that need attention. he charges about £35 for this but that is refunded if you have any of the things fixed there.

You mean the dial console wobbles?? The unit is only held in by 2 screws, one at each lower corner possibly just them loose. Does the engine warning light come on when you turn on the ignition before starting the engine, it has been known for traders to remove the engine warning light blub coz they don't know how to check the fault codes, normally turns out to just be charge cooler needing topping up.

Stock rear ARB bushes where about 4 quid each from Mr T last time I checked. You need 2.
