Cambelt Change

16v Executive

Hey there guys, gonna be doing a cambelt change on my rolla soon, although i've never done one before. Are they relatively simple to do? It's the 4af engine 1.6 16v. Looked through Haynes and looks ok, but wondered if anyone else has got experience/knowledge that may help?

Cheers

JJ

its easy just dont do it wrong or you will bugger up your engine.

I like to count all the teeth just to make sure the new and old belts are the same.

Also I have been told to only buy genuine belts as you will have no comeback if a pattern belt fails.

Finally got the cambelt changed! If you havent already done the cams, to let you know.. its a proper effort to do it! lol. In all honesty the only bit that was proper fiddly was getting the pulley off the crank, and then gettin it back on again. Definetly invest in a legged gear puller!

Good luck if you havent done the cam yet!

Also does anyone know how dodgy a whining cambelt is, think it may have been tightened a bit too much really? Thing is, the tensioner requires everything to come back off again! lol :(

If it is whining you have overtightened it. Maybe best to re-tension it to the correct spec. Having it too tight may result in premature belt failure/ bearing wear.

according to my haynes manual if you put a spring balance between the two cam pullies and exert a downward force of 2kg the belt should move 4mm.

Might be worth a try befor you take every thing off again.

Also did you check the bearing in the tensioner pully for wear?

Ye that was the problem I didnt have one, so it was entirely guessing 2kg weight lol. Think i'll have to invest in a spring balance. :P

The cambelt came with a new tensioner, so shudnt be a problem with the bearing.

Retightened my cambelt, alls good now... except when i was putting the water pump pulley back on i sheared one of the bolt heads off. It has 4 bolts to start with, but only has 3 holding it on now. Reckon thats gonna be a problem???

If so does anyone know where I cud get a replacement bolt from?

Cheers
