Running Seriously Rich

hi, everyone.

So just got back from a rolling road sesion on sat. Had an Apex-i AVCR installed and put the boost up to 1.1bar on my st205. :)

Other Power Mods:

Aussie 3" Down Pipe

Mongoose Exhaust

Blitz Panel Filter

Charge cooler flushed and lagged

All Service parts fuel filter plugs leads ect done

When on the rollers the fuelling was so rich it was off the scale :( this is obviously affecting my power output quite badly its produced 260bhp. compared to when i had it done with just the mongoose on there and nothing else it got 262bhp.

The mechanic suggested an Apex-i S-AFC which will allow me to lean the mixture out to the correct mix and hopefully produce the cars potential BHP. Which i think with those mods should see me about 280 - 300bhp @1.1bar

Have any of you guys had any experience with this little gismo? and also is there any thing on that list that would have caused this wild overfuelling?

Any help much appreciated.

to be fair 4's run on the rich side anyway. why not save up and get the Power FC as that is fully stand alone and will enable any furthur mods to be catered for.

as good as th s-afc is it still only modifies the signal from the stock ecu.

Your right Power FC would be much better, patience is not my strong point  but its probably worth waiting and saving up. Ive read before that they do run rich as standard but surely not as much as mine was.

Any ideas on possible faults with other parts lamba sensor etc ? that maybe causeing the ecu to overfuel it.

The stock lamba sensor is a narrow band one and as such the ecu only runs in close loop during light throttle off boost situations like motorway crusing etc, so that wouldn't matter.

The stock ecu does overfuel pretty badly normally in the 10:1 area especially when you start upping the boost above 1 bar. Basically it's as though the ecu see's the boost increasing and goes on a massive "Dump loads of fuel in to keep things cool" drive.

As you've mentioned this does have a big effect on power, but more importantly it can also have a negative effect on the engine. Overfuelling on turbo cars helps to cool the intake hence reducing the likely hood of det, however generally speaking for a turbo car around 11.3:1 - 11.8:1 is considered as being on the cautious side of side best power is normally found around 12:1-12.5:1. Dropping into the low 10:1 and below can start to cause bore wash.

This is when there is to much fuel in the chamber and it produces a cleaning effect on the bores stripping them of their oil lubrication. This in turn produces higher wear rates and premiture engine failure :ffs: .

Personally I'd go with Dawesy's recommendation get yourself a power FC or alternative in there asap and get it sorted properly.

Chances are once you look into pricing you'll find the Power FC isn't that much more than the S-AFC costs, as a high percentage of both is the time spent on the rollers having the things mapped.

Thanks for your advice. - very helpful. Didnt realise that there was the same amount of mapping involved with the safc as a full power fc. A friend is having his impreza mapped at the moment and i know that it aint exactly cheap  so il have to do some serious saving and get the power fc. Get the job done right the fist time.

Cheers

James

Hi, I have an Apexi AVCR fitted to my st205. I had it set to 1 bar initially and ran 295 bhp, with just a custom centre and rear exhaust and cone filter. It was was also running rich, but not too bad.

My AVCR somehow lost its settings and I had to set it up again, this time I set it up with the rr guy driving the car on the rollers.

I set it to 1.1 bar and made 308bhp still running rich, but he said it was ok.

Maybe your car just goes mad with more boost and like said just dumps fuel.

I am also looking for some sort of standalone fuel computer to sort it properly, how much are these, as will need to start saving again for the rr time.

with mapping you gets what you pay for. the rolla cost me £700 to be mapped but the job was done well and time was taken to make sure it was right.

when looking for a mapper, dont choose the cheapest but the one that comes reccomended

PFC is the better way to go TBH as if you want to go further youll end up binning the S-AFC anyway.

if you go for a PFC get one for a rev 3 MR2 Tubby as you can then bin the cc setup for a FMIC at a later date with out any problems

it does seem that the car has gone a bit loopy since i upped the boost  If i replace its brain it will have no choice but to think what i want it to think!! :) and then it should behave!!

With regards to price another friend of mine was quoted £950 for an ecu and map for his scooby it wasnt a power fc but did the same thing.
