Driving An Mot Failure?

Anyone know the legal postion with respect to driving an MOT failure? My son is thinking of buying one but how do you test drive it or even get it to a garage without an MOT???

As far as I am aware it is only legal to drive it to the test station for a prebooked test

What about insurance and tax?

you can't tax a car without an MOT.

it MUST be insured if you take it on the road though. Unless you live in London, where I believe insurance is 'optional '

But my MOT runs out before my tax....

but your car is already taxed. If a car has neither tax or MOT then you need the MOT first in order to get a tax disc. I am somewhat surprised that this is still the case though - if a car fails it's MOT then you can't give Gordon his 'fair price for using and maintaining the highway'...........Oh, hang on, sorry......what was I thinking ?
