Engine Replacement "toyota Sludge"

Hi! everyone i'm a newbie aswell, but have a major problem with my Rav4. I was on the m6 near birmingham when my engine management light came on and the engine started knocking ,so i pulled straight over then realised that the knocking could be my big end bearings? Igot recovery home 120 miles and got my rav into the garage and was told i had a major problem. My oil had turned to sludge which could'nt circulate around the engine and damaged the big end bearings, conrod, pistons etc. My rav is an 02 plate with 56000 miles on the clock and 2 weeks out of warranty. I got straight onto toyota about this problem and the reply was something like your warranty is up and due to wear and tear it is not our problem.

So i did a bit of research and if you type into your search bar "toyota sludge" you will see that this is a major issue in the states , if anyone has had this problem please could you give me some advice on it? or if anyone knows were i can get a second hand engine , i have already tried the search engines but they are very pricey?

Hi

Welcome to the forum.

My experience of oil sludging goes back to the days of 20/50 multigrades or even straight 30 grade oils. These oils would sludge up with age and lack of use giving the symptoms you describe.

I have certainly not heard of it with modern low viscosity oil.

What have you been using?

Regards

There are various breakers who specialise in Japanese cars; Parts Gateway who use several companies to check; and a number of companies who will import an engine from Japan. A RAV of that age will only be in a breakers due to being a write off so you need to cast the net wide. Some of the Toyota engines (generally the older ones) are more easily available like the 3SFE - but you might want to check which other Toyo cars have the same engine fitted. Essentially you are looking for the block as the head should be ok (?) and I've found the block is pretty much similar with some of the engine family - eg 3SFE & 3SGE on older cars than yours.

Good luck !!
