Air Filter Frustration

Ant GT SS2

Last Friday I bought my first Celica (1st jap car actually) which I absolutely love.

I've got a 1994 2.0l GT SS-II - kicks out 177bhp according to the book.

As it's natually aspirated, I don't feel the need to do too much to It but was first step was an induction kit, so today, out of interest i decided to check out the condition of the air filter only to find a filter that doesnt fit properly has been stuck in the box. it is about 10mm too loand so sits on top of the rim rather than fitting in it and its got a gap of about 10mm on each side as it's not wide enoght.

this p*sses me off for 2 reasons:

1. Its been letting all sorts of unfilter cr@p into the engine for god knows how long

2. has the unrestricted airflow been giving a bit of a performance boost when it strictly shouldn't (i.e when i get a proper filter tomorrow, will i feel a dip in performance)

Serves me right for not checking when i bought it

On my uk GT the car actually preformed worse whenever i unclipped the airbox for a run (just for the noise).

Im sure all the crap thats been let into the engine was well burnt, get some carb/intake manifold cleaner and clean your intake to make sure no more does.
