My G7 Sounds Like A Aerosol Can Of Paint!

First like to say hello to you all... Sorry to say this (although it is probably quite typical) but my first post is a question (or two!)!

I own a G7 with under 30k miles.. however recently it sounds like an aerosol can of paint when i drive slow.. under 10 mph.... I can only describe this as a rotational rattling against some flimsy metallic object like the disc guards; and it is coming from the front drivers wheel.

I took the wheel off had a look and i'm pretty sure it must be the wheel bearings rattling about... Being a bit of a novice i first thought it may have been some object getting inside my tyre rattling in there

So anyway my question...... firstly could it be the wheel bearings? and if so isnt under 30k a little premature?

Thanks

Hello and welcome! 30k is pretty premature for wheel barings. Do you have any other symptoms?

Thanks for the reply....

Basically i have taken my wheel off, when i rotate the hub with my hand i can hear something rattling about in there... when i go fast the centrifugal force must pin it to the side so the sound stops.

Apart from this there are no other problems, the wheel nuts are not loose, the wheel when bolted on is stable with no sidewards movement.... At first thought it was a stone trapped in my disc guard, but the sound is def eminating from inside the hub.

Is this front or rear that the noise is coming from?

If it is rear it maybe the handbrake shoes/springs/clips inside the brake disc has come loose.

Also when you get the wheel off again check the rear face of the brake disc as these are prone to corroding badly and can produce a scraping noise at low speeds.

Hi, did you ever get to the bottom of this? I would have thought that if it was a wheel bearing on the front drivers side, you'd hear a rumbling, whirring kind of noise when cornering left as the weight is pushing on the drivers side wheel. That would happen at any speed too, and the harder you cornered the louder it should get theoretically.

The other thing it could be... and this is a long shot, but I'm wondering, if there's something loose inside your tyre? Actually trapped in the space where the air is? Not sure what it could be or how it would get there (maybe when fitting new tyre?) but that would explain why you only hear it when going slow as the centrifugal (can't spell) force would not be great enough to keep the object pinned to the inside of the tyre.

I hit my wheel on the curb one day and it stopped!

Although a few weeks back I replaced my front disks and when i gave then a good shake they rattled (and crumbled being totally rusted) so i think it was a stone or something stuck between the vents on the disk itself
