Revs High When Started

I have a 2001 auto 1.8 avensis which revs up to 2000rpm when started from cold or even just after sitting for an hour or so. This gradually drops to 750rpm after about five mins. Is this normal? I know there is a choke but this seems excessive. If I pop it into reverse or drive it gives an awful jolt during this 'choke' period as essentially it thinks I am pressing the accelerator and shifting! As the weather is quite good here at the moment this seems unusual as the engine is never really very cold. Toyota mech said it was normal but my old (1995) rav 4 never revved that hard from a start. Is it cause of the auto box perhaps? Thanks,

My avensis, my dads past 3 avensis have all rev'd high on there inital start up for like you say around 5 mins or so till it dips down to about 600-700 rpm. mine and my dads cars have all been manuals and 1.8's 1 was the lean burn 7a-fe that rev'd at 2000 rpm, and so do are current 1.8 vvt-i 1zz-fe.We have a 1.8vvt-i 2001 51 plate auto at work that to revs at around 2000 rpm so i would say this is normal.

Perfectly normal behaviour in ECU controll EFi Toyota's and most makes in general.

The best way of reducing the jolt is put your foot on the brake when you select reverse or drive rather than just letting it engage.
