Hello everyone,

I was wondering the following: after filling my tank, yesterday the first line went off after 135km (some 84mi). This appears to be a bit on the high side (a total of 810km/503mi autonomy if you do the maths) so I was wondering, from your experience, how reliable is the fuel indicator?

Another thing: yesterday I also had the chance to drive a FW Fox. Nothing special in general, but I just loved the feeling of the gear stick. I didn't think that such low-end cars can have such a nice feeling, with the stick sliding into each gear with a noticeable click feeling, and I felt kind of jealous... So I was wondering, is there any easy way to improve the feeling in Aygo, or is it an issue of the entire box being changed?

Cheers

Themis

From filling to the click on the pump I've had 30 miles and over 80 miles until the first bar goes out, with no major change in journeys - that's why I don't use this method to calculate consumption. Remember from very full you are using fuel from the filler pipe so the float won't move for a while.

From full all fuel gauges take a while to move - my A3 did over 100 miles. It's more importnant it's accurate when it's reading empty and from experience as soon as the warning goes you can get about 30 litres in - 3-5 litres reserve.

VAG gearboxes do have a very solid feel, I had a manual A2 and that had a 'clunky' gearbox where you could feel it going through the gate, the manual A3 I drove recently was the same. I've driven Japanese cars on and off for 20 years and the Aygo has a typical Japanese box - smooth but no real feeling of the gear engaging. Little you can do about it I'm afraid.

Thanks for your reply :)

I had not realised the extra-tank fuel which accounts for some of the extra mileage - nice detail. And indeed I have experienced (with other cars as well) a relative delay in the first line, but 135km was a bit high, so it spurred me to ask about the general reliability of the indications.

Personal experience shows indeed the same figures as yours for the last (warning) line.

Thanks for the disappointing (but expected) reply on the gearbox as well - I guess I'll have to live with it!

Regards

I've only run through about four tanks now, but the fuel gauge has been pretty consistent in its behaviour. The first two bars tend to run to about 150 km each. Then the following three bars are about 100 km each. I've had some variation on the order of +/- 10 km, but nothing too drastic. And as expected, the variation seems to correspond to how aggressively I'm driving, load in the car, and the type of driving (i.e. urban or motorway). I'd bet the first two bars are 7.5 L while the next four are 5 L (totalling to the expected 35 L). So depending on how you drive, your mileage will (literally) vary. :D

When filling your car up full of fuel, the fuel gauge will begin to slowly to go down and it appears you may be getting more mpg.

It then appears to speed up as the fuel level drops to maybe halfway and you think you may be doing less mpg.

This is due to the shape of the fuel tank and nothing to do with the economy if your tank is full!

In fact your mpg is going to be the same if the tank is full or almost empty.

It’s an illusion

i find that i get 120miles on the first bar then about 40 for the rest. when i first had the car i thought the fuel bar reading was dodgy!!!

I totally agree that the gearbox sucks in the aygo. Been looking for some sort of shortshift. The vw´s,audis, skodas is way better.

Couldn't agree more! My Aygo will go about 120 miles on the first bar, but get about 70-80 for the next few bars, then it seems to drop like a stone after halfway! As TVOR says though, it's the shape of the fuel tank!

But still, worked out I'm getting about 58 miles to the gallon on some runs... unbelievable!
