Gt4 Turbo On A 3sge St202

Hi all,

I have a toyota celica st202 import with a 3sge engine. Now its fast but not fast enough, and Ive searched for a low cost option of increasing power but cant find one. Everyone seems to do engine conversions (i.e dump a 3sgte engine from a st205 in), or buy an aftermarket turbo kit.

I was thinking though, after I saw a turbo with intercooler stripped off a st205 gt4 being sold for £250, could I fit one of those to my st202 engine? The engines seem to be simular after all...

Does anyone know if this has been done or whether it could be done? Im thinking of doing it myself so where could I get good advice as to how to go about it?

Any advice much appreciated. :)

Unfortunately it's not quite that simple.

The blocks are esentually the same structure wise however the compressions ratio on the 3s-ge is a bit on the high side for a turbo application, also you'd need a new ecu capable of handling boost applications as well as the associated extra sensors along with the cost of all the mapping.

On top of this you need to think about extra cooling and lubrication requirements. Turbos put alot of extra strain on the engine so without the associated upgrades being added the engine wouldn't last long.

I'm not saying it's not possible, it's just not as easy or cheap as buy a turbo and bolt it on. If it was everyone would already have done it. If your set on keeping the 202 I'd suggest going down the 3s-gte swap, however also take into consideration that you can pick up a decent ST205 for around 4K these days, and you then get all the additional benifits of 4wd, better brakes etc etc...

Yea I thought as much, I was going to get a gt4. Only trouble is I cant really afford one as the resale value of my st202 has halved due to paint damage, and insurance doubled on a gt4 due to a recent speeding fine.

I contacted Thor Racing and they quoted me £1300 for fitting it with all bits that are needed excluding turbo itself. I may still attempt it over my long summer so does anyone know of any good information sites for fitting turbos. Or know of any other cost effective upgrades I can try? I havent got much to lose as my car probs only worth a grand...

Cheers

easiest route is get a GT4 engine (st205) and a rev 3 MR2 gearbox and bolt it in along with the engine loom and ecu, should be plug and play. but your stil looking at a few grand for the bits plus fitting charges

Looks like Ill be saving up 4 a year to get a gt4 or a supra then... Cant believe no one has done this b4 but the money is better of being spent on a better car I guess. Cant find any good turbo fitting sites on google, this was the best I could find...

cheers bud.

you are better getting a 4 to be honest, only reason i did the rolla was you couldnt get one with the 3S-GTE in.

might make it 4WD in a year or too anyway

I don't know if its worth it, but you can get a "bolt on" turbo kit for the 3S-GE, if you go to www.takakaira.com, i think it's in the Power Enterprise subsection (go past all the honda bits) and they sell a turbo kit for the ST202.

Yea m8 I know, its far too expensive!! Heres the link 4 ne one who needs it:

http://www.takakaira.com/performance/main.html

It looks like it just gives you a trubo a manifold and the pipes/fixings, which all can be easily be gotten much cheaper 2nd hand off a gt4/mr2. Ive seen a ct26 turbo off a 3sgte mr2 and am considering buying it with the intercooler and manifold for £140. For that price I cant really loose. What you guys think?

engine internals wont take it for long mate. 6psi is about the limit on a stock GE bottom end also the head gasket is a weak link too. get a 3S-GTE and swap it in you wont regret it

Just found a good yahoo group where turboing 3sge is gone through in detail :

http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/3sgeturbo/

Apparently there is no trouble with the internals only difference is compression ratio which is the only major problem when your running high boost which I wont. Thanks for all advice but I recon I ll probs try and do this in a month or so so Ill post closer to date!
