Roof Bars For Avensis Hatch - Advice Please

I'm heading off for sunny Padstow to pay my respects to Rick Stein's dog, Chalkie, who passed away a few weeks ago (oh, all right then, I'll be building sand castles, drinking Doom Bar bitter and acting as a peacemaker to squabbling kids) in a few weeks and need to secure a roofbox carrying all the family's crap to the top of my 53 reg 'new-shape' Avensis hatch so am in the market for a pair of roof bars.

I normally buy bars from a main dealer, as they tend to fit better, but wondered if anyone had any experience of Thule of Mont Blanc bars, which are going to be much cheaper (I'll probably only use them three times in the next two years before changing the car).

Would anyone recommend Thule or Mont Blanc ahead of Toyota roof bars and if so where's the cheapest place to buy?

Over to you chaps.

fitted MrT version to wife's Corolla - nice fit and cost me about £100.

fitted Paddy Hopkirk version (from Halfwits) to my Mk1 Avensis - cost me about £60 and it only takes a little more time to line them up carefully.

the beauty of the PH version is that you can use the common bars and simply change the pedestals if you change the vehicle type.

I don't like leaving the roofbox on the car if possible so tend to leave it in the holiday accomodation if space allows. if this isn't possible then think about a length of chain and padlock so that you can store it somewhere safe. fit the chain via the "u" bolt fixings using the padlock as the link.

Problem solved.

Checked with Mr T and got a quote of £136.04. I would have bought them there and then but the 4p did it for me :D

Called in at Halfwits and worked out the cost of Thule system on my own (I'm a big boy now) - I would have asked a member of staff but they must have been playing hide and seek, as they always are - at £110 (without the locks).

Just spent 20 minutes online at lunchtime and ordered the full Thule system, including locks and delivery, from www.skidrive.co.uk for a mere £80. Bargain.

Just have to work out now where I can go skiing when I drive to Cornwall in June.....
