Does anyone know what the reason is that some towbars state (Only 4x4 with 215/70R16 tyre) or (not for 4x4 with 215/70R16 tyre):huh: ?

regards

Chris.

Duuuhhhhh, not an expert on this, but from experience I have found the RAV tow ball height comes into play with various types of trailer. For example its a perfect height for towing our twin axle caravan we use for rugby; but it would be too low if a different profile wheel/tyre was used (which of course would affect gearing etc etc). I suppose the same could be said for using lowered springs (eg those on offer via Toyo racing which drop 30mm)

ps You should see our rugby caravan - its got a lighting mast poked through the middle of the roof with 3 massive stadium metal halide floods - allows us to train on grassybits and the RAV is able to get the heavy beast into place!

Thanks for the reply bothwell buyer not sure about the Duuuhhhhh though, the differnce between the 2 tyre sizes is 19mm i would of thought they would make 1 towbar to suit all or a taller detachable section I know there is a lower one made by Brink as it has been mentioned in this forum.

Is it to do with the clearance of the spare on the back door?

  • 2 months later...

If I can hi-jack this tow bar thread...

I have just fitted a towbar to my 98 Mk2 Rav4 (3dr)... I need to wire the tail lights, indicators etc. to the trailer socket cable. Doe's anyone know which side of the vehicle the wiring loom comes to the rear light cluster(s) NSR or OSR ? (right hand drive UK Rav). It would be great if there was tow bar wiring point/connector on the Rav, but that would be expecting to much I suppose? I just want to make sure I dismantle the correct side trim panels to get to the wiring harness...

I have searched the web, but can find no information on this at all... only diagrams for the pin-outs for the trailer socket... which I have anyway.

TIA

DaveH (UK)

sorry - the duuuuhhhh bit was cos I couldn't remember (its my age showing!). For what its worth, I found that towing a small trailer with a lightweight coupling was ok and could get the back door open - but towing anything a bit larger meant that the back door couldn't open past the coupling on the tow hook. The towbar had been fitted from new and I haven't looked to see if its adjustable. Its a nuisance if you can't open the door past the coupling I can tell you.

Thanks for the link... yeah, some of the tow bar manufacturers and or installers password protect their wiring info! :(

I have tripped across a few of these protected wiring sites.

I have just tried this link and it seems that you need a username and password.....?

To quote the toyota brochure it says "A detachable tow bar can be used with all 4x2 vehicles and 4x4 vehicles with 235 tyres. For 4x4 vehicles with 215 tyres a fixed tow bar must be used. Trailer coupling must be removed to open rear door."

That's a 2002 brochure. Also if you go into that site from its main page and look at the different towbars for the Rav it mentions it there. (Well it does for the 2000-2005 model 4.2 Rav and selecting Brink towbars)
