Whining Sound

I've been hearing a whining sound coming from the front of the car for a while now but no garage Mr T or otherwise has been able to find a fault.

I thought it had gone away but with the wet weather recently it seems to have come back. It only comes on when the steering is slightly off centre in either direction but braking or turning a sharp corner causes it to disappear again.

I know that it isn't the wheel bearings or the fan belt and there is a reasonable amount of material left on my pads so I'm at a loss to explain why or exactly where the sound is occuring. Does anybody have any suggestions?

Sort of stumped by that one I'm afraid.

Only answer I would've had would've been wheel bearings, but if they've been confirmed as okey, then I'm not sure what else would cause it...

Have you had a Toyota Technician in the car with you when the fault has occured?

I would agree about it possibly being related to the wheel bearings.

Who advised that it was not wheel bearings?......................might be an idea to seek a second opinion

dunno if this helps at all, could it be anything to do with the power steering??? an old megane i had made a similar noise and there was a leak on the power steering pump and there was no fluid left so it made that noise, and if u had a service by MR T they might have filled the power steerin fluid but now its drained

I thought that the Yaris Diesel had electric power steering

Thanks for the help guys I'm going to take it in to Mr T when it next makes the sound.

I dismissed it being the wheel bearings as 2 local garages have both looked at these as well as my father in law + the sound disappears with more than a slight turn of the wheel which as I understand it is the opposite of what a wheel bearing noise would do.

I drove her really hard the other day 90+ speeds when "safe" (not big or clever I know) and it seems as though the noise gets worse the harder I drive her. Which could explain why it doesn't always make a sound as normally I drive quite slowly for the extra economy.
