Possibly The Worst Week Ever

Ever have one of THOSE weeks when you wished you'd stayed in bed? Well i've just had one...

1. Having dropped the missus off at Manchester Royal hospital on Monday my (up until now) trusty steed displayed the dreaded red thermostat indicating an overheating issue. Took T-Sport to a 'mate' who discovered a faulty thermostat -Cost £50 to replace, antifreeze, labour etc. :(

2. In the meantine i tooks missus' Yaris SR back to Manchester to pick her up - she was delayed and we ended up with a £30 parking ticket. :angry:

3. Had call from my mate who states that T-Sport is still overheating - leaking head gasket causing gas pressure build up stopping the water flow around the engine! :crybaby:

4. Can't seem to find anyone who's willing to change the head gasket as they seem to think that specialist tools may be required - i really didn't want to use my local Mr T as last time they diagnosed a faulty alternator when it was a faulty water pump (which has been changed i might add).. and also they'd spank me. :help:

5. Brought car home and discovered a puncture in the rear tyre. :crybaby:

6. My chimney flashings started leaking. :angry:

7. My Dad's bedroom bay started leaking water in so up the ladders i had to go coz he's 75 and i don't like him up ladders nowadays. :huh:

8. Went to Docs today to collect repeat prescription - was closed despite the wife's insistance that it was open. :angry:

9. Some guitar stuff that i'd had imported from USA arrived today - incomplete! :ffs:

10. Man Utd lost the FA Cup.. :censor:

Roll on MONDAY !!

Additionally, how much do you think i'm looking to pay for a head gasket replacement? As previously mentioned, when people see that it's a VVTi Engine they don't seem to want to know.. Is there anyone on the Blackpool area that can be recommended?

That’s the first time I’ve read about a head gasket going on a T Sport :crybaby:

I thought these engines were bullet proof.

Garages take the pee when it comes to head gaskets, there not as bad as everyone makes out. I have a good knowledge of cars, but my practical experience is vey limited.

Id never attempted a HG job, but i found it easy, just follow the instructions. I cant see what specialist tools would be needed, and a respectable garage should have all the tools, or at least know where to get them from.

if i were in your position, id find some friendly people with tools (if you havent got any) on here to come round and help you take your head off, label all your wires as you disconnect them, go to a machinsts and get the head re-surfaced. Gently scrape the old bits of gasket off your block, order the gasket and stretch bolts (if toyotas use these??) and whack it back on.

unure on how the chain comes off but im guessing its simialr to taking a cambelt off?

in essence all engines are the same, people shouldnt be scared just because the yaris has lots of fancy electronic gizmos on the engine. If you can put a mental barrier on all of that and see it as a simple 4 cylinder 4 stroke internal combustion engine its not all that bad.

depending on how competent you are with engines and a spanner, it shouldnt be a problem to do yourself providing youve got all the tools.

i would like to say i feel sory for you but i dont cause your a man u fan

but its ok you can watch a real football team play this week liverpool fc for europe

only joking as for you car i think its an easy job all you need are the torque settings as they have to be spot on or the car will not run right

Won't the head need skimming though?? if so, is that a job that can be done yourself??

Its not as easy as everyone is making out. Your gonna have to drain oil and anti freeze, remove exhaust and inlet manifolds, plus anything else that gets in your way. Your then gonna have to remove the timing chain and remove the camshafts as well as all the tappets (remembering the exact order they came out). u'll then remove the head and have to get it skimmed. u'll then have to prepare all the contact surfaces ready for the new gasket. Then uv got the small matter of getting it all back together again in exactly the same order you took it off or u'll end up with another blown gasket or reduced engine life. Get the valve timing wrong and its a dead engine. also if its on your backstreet or drive etc, if you lose or break anything your gonna have to wait til you can get hold of your new parts or tools, plus u'll have to contend with fading daylight! I personally think there is too much that can go wrong to do it on your own and if you dont know exactly what your doing. thats just me tho!! :)

Well i've tried 'most' things in my time but having a bash at this on my driveway just doesn't fill me with confidence.. if it were an 80's Ford then fair do's....

Have been quoted £300 for a second hand engine from a breakers yard with 90 days warranty... sound a little extreme i know but if i were to do the job myself i'd sooner swap the engine.. any thoughts?

Remember last week was a nightmare? .... well.... this week ain't as bad ... just had a call from the garage that i'd dropped the car off at...... it wasn't the Head gasket it was the !Removed! water pump !! I'd only had a new water pump installed in Feb!

Every mechanic that had seen the symptoms diagnosed the Head Gasket - especially when i'd told them that i'd already had the pump renewed but this young lad was adamant that he was going to check out the pump first and by God i'm glad he did....

Anyway he's saved the old one so that i can take it back to the bloke who fitted it and get a refund... watch this space...

its easier to get a friend who is a technician, i have done a few head gaskets never had any problems, done one on a honda civic type R, and thats a very busy engine, have you tried getting a quote off toyota ? its better to be safe than sorry!

No need buddy.. like my last post stated .. it was in fact the water pump and not the head gasket... i took the 3 month old water pump back to the garage who fitted it and got a refund.... one seriously relieved chap at this end ! lol

Yes very strange indeed... apparently the water pump that failed was of a plastic construction (the impellers).... the new one is metal - "nearer to the original" - quote from mechanic... cost about 20% more..

Nope, it was from www.sustainiac.com ... i bought an infinite sustain system to stick in me Fender Strat..... they left off the removable Battery cover by mistake.. it's on it's way as i type...
