Avensis D4d T Spirit 05 - Fuel Economy

I have just purchased a 2nd user D4D T Spirit, but am concerned at the fuel economy.

When it was on the forecourt, it was shown to me as having had an average of 41mpg - however, since it has been serviced (50,000) that figure has dropped to around 37 - 38mpg.

I did tell the garage (Yeomans Eastbourne) that when i test drove the vehicle, it felt as if it were 'missing' so they cleaned the injectors through. The 'missing' feeling has gone, and it really does shift now :yahoo: but the fuel economy seems to have dropped.

I would hope it would be nearer 45mpg to be honest, but am i being a little bit too keen here?

A friend of mine did suggest that maybe the trip computer needed resetting as it was being confused by a decaying average (?) so is this something i can do, or does this need to be done by the dealer?

Aside from that, it is a lovely car, albeit a bit noisy on the road, but i'm so used to having been driving the petrol 1.4 Corolla since '02, that maybe i haven't got used to the new sound of this diesel yet?

Comments welcome :)

They're noisey on the motorway due to the design of the door seals, which over the course of 5 years (since our 02 avensis d4d) Toyota has failed to notice and fix.

Expect to turn the cd player up reasonably loud when you're doing about 80/90 on the motorway to hear it decently.

Your friend is right about decaying average. On mine what I do is go to the mpg view and then press and hold the button down that I use to skip to that view, and after 2 seconds I get a beep and the mpg resets itself to 0, and then works out the mpg from that point onward. I regularly reset mine to get accurate averages.

I will do little motorway driving, so am not likely to reach those sorts of speeds, but i have to say, when i said noisy, i meant noisier.... i'm not unhappy about it in the slightest :)

Thanks for the tip about resetting the fuel averages, i'm off to do that right now!

I have the T3-S D4D same year but has only covered 25000miles, have had same issues as you, rubbish mpg and missing, Main dealer "cleaned" injectors which too 2 days!! problem went away for a while. Then it came back with vengance, back to the dealer who told me injectors 1 and 4 knackered, they changed them under warranty and this too 9 days. Car was better, mpg was even worse. 1100 miles on car missing again when hot and mpg around 36 on 100 mile round trip to work 90% M way. It been back to the dealer today and funnily enough theres another knackered injector, they wont say whether its an old one or a new one!!

Long and short of it is car has to go back into dealer they plan to change 1 injector, am not happy with this and will be demanding 4 new ones and pipework replaced. Hope you have more luck than me, but would suggest you get it sorted before you hit 60,000 and your warranty runs out. Injectors are around £700 each and apparently they need to take the head off to do them!!

Post if you get any joy, I'd be very interested

That seems rough luck. :( I've just traded my 05 diesel and it always did 54-55 mpg on and A road run and 50-52 on Mways. In town it dropped to low 40s if I was doing short trips in the cold weather. Performance wise it just got better and better after the first 2000 miles.

The 2.2 is slightly worse on A roads and slightly better on Mways with the 6th gear. Round town it roughly the same as the 2.0L.

Hope you get yours sorted because it's a good car. :)

hmmmm..... wondering if i am being fobbed off by dealer. he says my average speed is low, so i can't expect my mpg to be high. I am finding it to be around 38mpg no matter how i drive it. I drive a lot of A roads as i commute 30 mins each way to work. My speed on this trip can vary between 20 and 80mph! I am a bit of a hard accelerator though, but not all the time...

My momentary mpg is good, as that records low 40's or high 50's sometimes, and i use cruise control wherever possible.

Still under warranty for another 12 months (just under) so I will be keeping a close eye on it. When i first got the car, they did do an injector clean, so i was told, and to be honest, i've no issues with the way the thing drives. It looks good, drives well, and my fuel economy is going to be better than my 02 petrol Corolla ever was, so i'm not concerned just yet.

Be interested to hear comments about what the dealer said regarding average speed etc....

PS I can't hold and reset the average MPG, it resets itself when i fill up, according to the book. How it detects this i know not, maybe when i open the fuel door?
