I would expect a gearbox to last more than 91,000 miles if its wear and tear you would expect many more Avensis gearbox to go at that mileage

What has your car been used for??? unless its a Taxi I guess the mileage would have been put on motorway trips which should not put any work on the gearbox .

Take the matter up with the dealer principle and if you do not get any joy go to Toyota GB and see what they have to say

Perhaps some of the Toyota technicians who visit the site could give some advise to you

Hey there,

If you don't mind me asking, prior to 5th gear poping out did you used to get any strange vibration when in 5th gear.

Thanks,

Hi there,

I drive an Avensis 2.0 D4D T4 (2004 model) with a five speed manual gearbox as a company car and travel around 40,000 miles each year, mostly on motorways in fifth gear. Overall I believe the Avensis to be the best value car in it's class, but I've been disappointed with the reliability of the gearbox. In the last 18 months it has jumped out of fifth gear on several occasions, each time the dealership has repaired it under warranty and carried out at least two separate modifications recommended by Toyota (I even have a case number for future repairs).

The symptoms begin with the gear lever moving back and forth under acceleration and deceleration in fifth gear (not in any other gears), then popping out after some 6,000 - 12,000 miles. The gear lever also vibrates in fifth, and when holding it in fifth gear I feel a rumbling sensation coming up through the gear lever. Apparently this problem is specific to diesel engined cars which are driven constantly in fifth gear in situations such as motorways where there would be a lot of accelerating and decelerating in fifth. Hence the change from the five speed gearbox to six speed, now fitted to the 2006 models behind the diesel engine (petrol engines continue to use the same five speed gearbox because they produce less torque than diesels and therefore they are not affected by this problem).
