Avensis 2007 Vsc Sensitivity

Hi all,

I have a new (4K Km) Avensis 2.0 vvti and was wondering about my ESP/VSC. More specifically:

If I use the first gear on a slightly slippery road and fully press the accelerator pedal, then the car will accelerate with the tyres spinning for a lot of time (2''). At the same time, the ESP indicator will be flashing. Is this correct behaviour. I though that with ESP you cannot make your tyres spin or at least the spining does not last for 2''. Note that while the ESP light is flashing I hear some sounds from ONLY the rear side of the car. These are the same sounds that I hear the first time I start moving ahead (ESP calibration?).

The more strange behavior is that I cannot make the VSC engage (ESP light on and beeping sound). If I pull the hand break and oversteer, the VSC works (beep + light). If I do not use the hand break and simply HEAVILY understeer, the VSC is not engaging. Why?. Yesterday, I almost crashed because the VSC did not engage in a HEAVY-HEAVY-HEAVY understeer situation. The car moved with 30-40Km/h and I tried to make a 90 degrees turn. The car did not respond and continued going ahead. After approx 1'', I engaged the breaks and the car stoped a few meters before the end of the road. This was unacceptable behavior. In fact the car should not had understeered taking into account the road conditions and speed.

I went to Toyota and the on-board computer says that all systems and sensors are working properly.

Please share with me your experiences so that I can understand why the VSC did not assist me.

Thanks

Sorry Frape but........

Call me old fashioned but I thought that VSC / ESP / ABS etc was a safety aid which was there as a "last resort" to get you out of trouble. They were never designed to relieve drivers of their responsibilites in not getting into trouble in the first place

Hi

I don't think VSC corrects for understeer, which is natural car dynamics.

'I think' it allows you to retain composure while slamming on the brakes, for example if you come around a bend and there is a car overtaking in your lane, - immeadiate reaction is to brake and to swerve out of the path of the oncoming car. With VSC it allows you to swerve violently and brake. Without VSC I think you end up in the bushes or rolling the car.

The traction control shouldn't allow the wheels to spin much on dry roads.

It does still spin a bit in snow I think.

My car's VSC does its best to prevent from understeering.

In snow when i come slightly to fast into a bend, the car applies

at least one of the rear wheel brakes to make it point

in the direction to where I'm steering.

If the understeer is not instantly fixed, the ABS kicks in

until the cars front wheels gets their grip back.
